Niners Looking for #1 Receiver

Pro Football Weekly is reporting that while it appears the Niners intend to keep their faith in suspended WR Antonio Bryant, we hear he no longer is projected as the team’s No. 1 receiver heading into 2007.

In a perfect world, our Niners sources tell us, the team will find a new candidate for the No. 1 role either via the draft or free agency and plan on Bryant and Arnaz Battle filling the bill as the No. 2 and No. 3 receivers, respectively.

There are certainly not really any #1 receivers on the free agent market so most likely they are talking about the draft. Calvin Johnson? Ted Ginn Jr? Dwayne Jarrett?

  1. Unless we trade down, there is no way we’ll land a spot to get Calvin johnson and does anyone know if Dwayne Jarret has declared for the NFL? As far as the draft is concerned those two, in my opinion, are the only two legit NFL-ready Recievers.

Other than that, it seems that we can get a solid #2 reciever in a Drew Bennet (Titans), or a slot reciever in Kevin Curtis (Rams) through Free Agency; both proven veterans.

So realistically, I think that Antonio Bryant will defaultly remain the #1 target as we draft and pick up free agents with an emphasis on improving our defense. I may be wrong, but it seems to make sense, given the situation we’re in.

  2. SHIT!!! that’s good news. the receiving core is gonna own!!

  3. eventhough arnaz battle is not the #1 reciever he still was more prodctive than Bryant!!!!!!!!!

  4. i dont think ted ginn jr. would fit into a west coast offense.just look at joey galloway hes only had one,one thousand yard seaon with tampa.plus ted jinn is only180 pounds soaking wet.we need big receivers for yards after the catch.like jeff samardzija, ryan moore or washington states jason hill, plus there are some small school players i like fresno states, paul williams and west virginias brandon myles and north carolinas jesse holley and marylands drew weatherly and michigan states matt trannon and purdues kyle ingraham he is listed at6-9 228, picture alex smith throwing the ball in the air for kyale ingraham!

  5. the fastest tight end in vernon davis and the tallest receiver(6-9 228) in kyle ingraham.

  6. bryant caught 2 passes a game, and battle caught 12 balls in the last two games5 against dever and 7 against arizona.if battle was a little faster he would be a good starter.

  7. and im tired of watching herman edwards cry,we play to win the game,we ALL play to win the game.HE IS A GOOD DEFENSE COACHnot a good head coach, ask his quarterbacks, none of them ever stay healthy.

  8. Arnaz Battle was productive the anyone thought he would,so Bryant being suspended and will miss first two games of next season i think we should consider highly to get a WR in draft,DJ(dwayne Jarrett) is just that guy i’d like to see the 49ers pick but its all up to if his there for the 11th pick we have if he is then its up to the 49er organization Nolan and company too make a decision or either picking him or going D on the Pick,as far as calivn johson goes he’ll be gone early in top 5 or maybe 2nd to Detroit as everyone knows matt millen..soo come 49ers make the right choice with the 11th pick(Dwayne Jarrett )if his there!

  9. dwayne jarrett is staying at usc for another year!!!

  10. Total picks, ‘let me know if you got da same count”
    1st- 1
    2nd- 1
    3rd- 3
    4th- 4
    5th- 1
    6th- 1
    7th- 0

  11. pick up Porter, dont draft a WR…
    Draft D
WE need a Stronger pass rush, DE, LB CB,S
    MORE DEPTH
“help on da O line cant hurt, RT is a must”

  12. By the way, Since Jim Mora JR. was fired from Atlanta, does anyone think it would be a good idea for the 49ers to persue him as our defensive coordinator?

he could probably help us a lot.

  13. one more thing..slightly off topic, but did anyone notice how much better our defensive played, ever since Sammy davis was put on IR.

    PLEASE CUT SAMMY DAVIS!!! PLEASEEE

  14. i don’t think mora would come back. talk about a step back. moving back to what you left a few years ago? i think mora’s a head coach now, whether it’s in college or the nfl.

as far as the draft, i’d love to go for defense, but it all depends on the free agent pick ups. if we get someone like clements, we probably don’t have to draft a corner in round 1. there’s some lb’s and d linemen out there that could be good pick ups. if that’s the case, then a wr wouldn’t be bad.

i think as far as priorities, i go cb, pass rush, then wr. late in the draft, some depth at offensive line.

  15. BIGM,since you seen some of the fresno state games,is paul williams any good?

  16. Yeah he’s a badass… I would be pretty stoked if the Niners waited and drafted him. He has good speed, excellent size and hands (when he concentrates). He made some plays last year when Pinegar was the QB. They didn’t get him the ball as much this year. But yeah he’s a real football player.

  17. Yo I like the Jim Mora Jr idea so do I like the idea for jerry poter, I also like the jeff samarzidja thing to, even though it’s a long shot but I would try to trade for randy moss if alex smith had him to throw deep passes to moss it would be like mcnabb having that deep ball threat when T.O was there to catch those passes and it made me sick to be here in philly and had to watch these fake ass eagles fans here get to enjoy that.

But if nate clement is a free agent then I would try to sign him and get some more strong corners to help out walt harris and the three year extention they gave mark roman and the viciousness of keith lewis makes our defense not to be fucked with keith lewis reminds me of ronnie lott and to get mora is something real fuckin special!

  18. Mora is a 4-3 guy, Davis is a 3-4 guy…. If we fired Davis, which I really doubt, we’d go for another 3-4 guy such as Dick LeBeau (if he leaves Pittsburgh). The main reason our defense was so bad this year was because it is in transition as far as personnell… even when they started playing better, guys were slightly out of position or were being asked to do things they weren’t used to doing. Notice our D Ends weren’t passrushers, but Gap-Cloggers that were asked to penetrate to the quarterback. That’s why our run defense was so good and our pass defense so bad.

  19. paul williams in the third round would sound nice.

  20. and i agree with bigm, about jim mora jr.how about dom capers if he is avalable if nick saban leaves..

  21. my question is,,,,,,, Is jerry porter a true #1 wide reciever or would he be another A. bryant? he has always played between a better and worse reciever. can he step up, and do we really wanna gamble?

  22. Think of it this way. Bryant, Battle and Porter are all suitable #2 receivers (at least). In a way I think I’d rather have three #2 quality wideouts and run a three-wide set than a basic system of a #1, #2 & #3. Coverage is too easy for that system, but for the one I speak of, it may end up baffling defenses not knowing who will break.

Oh, and we do have that one guy to throw to. I heard he was pretty good, he’s fast and really big…what’s his name? Oh yeah, Vernon Davis.

  23. I agree with Brandon. having a quality GROUP of recievers would be key. Alex Smith tended to Lock onto Antonio bryant this year, causing certain interceptions that shouldn’t have happened. But with the emergence of Arnaz Battle and (Hopefully) acquiring another #2 type reciever, The ball could simply be spread around keeping defenses on their toes.

Same goes for Defensive backs. Walt Harris and Shantae Spencer are solid, but with a nickel/dime corner like Sammy Davis, it doesn’t even matter. Everyone is going gaga over Nate Clements, who indeed is a good player, but I’d rather have two more decent corners to cover the depth of recievers that the Cardinals, rams and Seahawks all have.

  24. johson falling to us is imposible. if their going offence (which i hope they dont in the 1st round) it’ll be tedd ginn jr. that guy is speed on top of speed on top of speed!!! him bryant and vernon davis. whos gonna cover who? teams will need to play dime at all times and frank gore will run wild. nfc west is a rap next year!!! go niners !!! back to the promised land where they belong

  25. I like that…. Jerry Rice…. Teddy Ginn…. you guys feelin that one?

  26. Hey big M, 49ers played more 4-3 than 3-4 this year in case you did not notice.

  27. I did notice… that’s why our defense was horrible at the beginning of this year, mr. commish

  28. How come nobody is even considering Stallworth and Leonard Davis, I mean hell we would be taking the best offensive lineman from a division opponents team

  29. I don’t know about Leonard Davis but the asshole eagles will probably lock down stallworth plus I don’t know about stallworth and his hamstring injuries on and off thru out this season.

    We don’t need damaged goods!

  30. I don’t want any part of Jarret, that guy has TO written all over him. Johnson would be nice, but I don’t think he’ll be there at 11 (the Lions do pick @ 2) and I don’t know that Ginn is a #1.

Anything is an upgrade over Harris, plus landing Davis would allow the Niners to seriously consider the Broncos offer when they come asking about Smiley. They could move Snyder, Baas or Wragge into the RG spot and not miss a beat.

  31. I doubt the Eagles will, Stallworth is from Sacramento, and grew up a 49ers fan and is now done with his rookie contract, he did not get along well with McNabb and didn’t really do much on thier offense until Garcia took over. He is fast and can catch. I would like to see Stallworth, Bryant & Battle in the slot taking the field at the same time.

  32. BOO! Do you guys go to any of the games? I’m was at 6 games this season where I was able to view the entire field, not just the angles TV chose for me. I can tell you first hand, that while every wide receiver will say they are open every play, Antonio Bryant actually was (not really, but he was open A LOT in the 5 games I saw him play - easily 50% of the time). This was most notable in the Green Bay game. Al Harris could not stay with AB. AB beat him off of the line just about every play. I lost my voice screaming out “BRYANT” play after play as I saw him break away from Harris with a 2-3 step lead. I would say that Smith just couldn’t deliver him the ball, but the real problem was that he rarely looked AB’s way. Maybe there is a rift in the relationship, maybe Smith lacks the confidence to throw him the ball, maybe… maybe he should toss the pigskin to the guy 12 times a game and see what happens.

And as far as AB being the out-of-control, me-first type of trouble-making player we all thought we were getting in the off-season, I was personally SHOCKED at the lack of verbal abuse towards his QB and his team for not getting him the ball. I screamed at Alex more than AB did for not throwing it to him. AB had to be the most frustrated guy on the field, being open every other play and only getting 2-3 passes a game for the last half of the season.

  33. thats what i heard too.but i live in jersey and only chance i get to see them was on tv.i seen the first arizona game both seatle games the awfull philly game and the overtime in denver and the high lights on sports center or the nfl networkwich arent much.but i heard that about antonio bryant.maybe bryant told alex smithand alex stopped looking for bryant.remeber alex is only 22.as long as this dont turn into a dannavan mcnabb and terrell owens deal we should be ok hopefully…..

  34. dwayne jarrett is a jackass.calvin johnson will go before we can get him.ted ginn jr. is ok.the one major reciever that is perfect for the 49ers is jeff samardzija.I’m a notre dame fan, and I’ve seen almost every ND game in 2006.jeff isn’t the fastest but he is tall and thick and he can get open.he isn’t very effective in goin deep,(that’s what battle and bryant are for)he is deadly in the red zone.and in the end zone he is unstoppable, he can catch anything!just watch the sugar bowl tonight.I will be looking forward to the game just because I like ND but I want to see laron landry play too.

  35. jeff samardzija WR notre dame
    desmond bishop LB cal

FA: nate clements CB,lance briggs LB,

  36. I would be so stoked if we draft jeff samardzija from notre dame,I love notre dame and the forty-niners.that would be freekin sweet.

  37. jeff samardzija….nobody else

  38. your lucky eddie, I live in oklahoma and the only games I have seen is the nfl network game and the bronco’s game on nfl replay which hasn’t aired yet!!so consider yourself lucky.plus the niners beat the broncos and they played two seconds of highlights, and all they interviewed was mike shanahan and not mike nolan.

  39. Samardzija makes more sense…he is A LOT more fast than anyone realizes. I agree with Mario…we don’t want Jarrett…he’s a ghetto jackass (no offense)and I would like the niners to draft players that aren’t going to be hanging our with pacman jones and getting into gun fights. Have you ever listened to Jarrett interview….he sounds like Larry Johnson …”we keep doin’ da same thing’ we done lotta weeks ago”…he has TO written all over him. Plus…he is 6′5″ and weighs 200 pounds flat. An NFL corner will have a ball pushing him around. Ginn might be a good pickup, but not with our first pick…we need to pick up a starter there. Despite what anyone thinks…Jarrett wouldn’t start immediately because (I hate Keyshawn Johnson) he ISN’T strong enough to muscle with the NFL corners. We’d throw passes to him high and he’d get his hands around it, but the corner will knock it away. He has toothpicks for arms.

  40. Plus Samardzjia has an NFL body and we might get him in the third round. We should use some of those 4th rounders and a 2nd to get another 1st round pick.

  41. save the free agency for defense, let’s get a reciever in the draft, anyways we got alot of young defensive guys like keith lewis and manny lawson.

  42. we need a wide receiver with speed who can spread a defense apart and who has the speed of a starter.jeff would be good as a second wide receiver, but we have a second wide receiver and a third.paul williams from fresno state as the forth receiver would be awsome.calvin johnson is the only receiver who would be worth drafting in the first round and what ever we do dont draft and defensive players from notre dame they got tourched alot this year.

  43. two,number ones,dont make eleven nicky boby.

  44. why don’t we trade up to get johnson???

  45. OR WE COULD TRADE SOME OF OUR PICKS FOR A NUMBER 1 RECEIVER LIKE REGGIE WAYNE FROM THE COLTS, OR ANDRE JOHNSON FROM THE TEXANS, OR ONE OF ARIZONAS GOLDEN BIRDS LF-AB

  46. Nah, Wayne and Johnson are there to stay for sure. But one of the two Cards might not be too farfetched. Maybe not Boldin, they just resigned him but Fitz might be sort of unhappy that Dennis Green left (they have a long history dating back to the Vikes). What about Bryant Johnson from the Cards though? That REALLY seems doable. I know, no matter what, Cards can’t keep all three and I’d take any of them ANY day. Especially Fitz.

    Pitt represent.

  47. DRAFTING DEFENSE IS THE ONLY CHOICE TO MAKE!
The offense is servicable, but the defense must be improved for any chance at success. We already have a prized pig on offense in Frank Gore!!

  48. im just sayin if we go with a reciever in the draft we should go with samardzija.even though notre dame got their asses handed to them last night,it was the defenses fault.samardzija is a big physical reciever and he has hands like no other plus he’s tall and he has class unlike dwayne jarrett.not to mention that samardzija played against laron landry.I think nolan will mostly go with defense.

  49. there is only a couple problems with samardzija,he might go into MLB, and somebody might get him before we do.if he does go to the MLB I hope the giants draft him

  50. DAWAYNE JARRET IS OUR TICKET TO THE BIG GAME

  51. we have plenty of money in the cap to activly seek defense in free agency. we should pursue nate clements from buffalo and a.thomas from baltimore. with the draft no question it should be dawayne jarret.with him he can go up and make the big play on the ball. put him with v. davis and bryant and battle with gore on the ground game and smith with his athletic moblity tomake plays continue im talkin superbowl

  52. I have a feeling that if nolan does go with a reciever he will go with samardzija, just because he is gonna coach the senior bowl.but nolan will probably go with Laron landry or someone else on defense.

  53. do you think john david boobies will be taken in the draft?

  54. The answer is obvious: we’re going to get T.O. back. Look, he’s clearly been a total screw-up everywhere since he left the Niners. He’s in the top 5 receivers in the league. We need a top gun to make Bryant into the number 2 and battle into a possession number three. Parcells hates his guts.

With T.O. and a quality off-season, we’re a contender next year. Are you willing to take that chance/get over old grudges? I am

  55. you have a good point, but I honestly dont see Nolan taking that chance. Nor do I see Terrel wanting to come back to Frisco.

  56. Haha, I love how you brought that up. I was waiting for someone and I didn’t want to be the first one.

Hey…what’s the worst that could happen? A Super Bowl loss next season?

It’s called a one-year contract with certain clauses, take a chance? I would, but I’m a risky type of person.

Think about it realistically. McNabb choked, T.O. would have been the Super Bowl MVP…and that’s with a broken leg! As for the Cowboys, I’d have an attitude problem if I was there too! No Jeff Garcia to worry about. Alex Smith is one of the smoothest, coolest cats I’ve ever seen throw the ball. McNabb is a sensitive baby. Romo is a one year fluke. Try it out, if it doesn’t work then it doesn’t work. But if it does…oh, baby…if it does…

  57. If we are going to draft a receiver then it needs to be a quality guy…not the mouthy Jarrett. Meachum from Tennessee entered the draft and we could get him in the later rounds. Check him out…he is the real deal. Jarrett is NOT what we NEED right now….we NEED defense.

  58. If Dwayne Jarrett comes out take him. We need a big-time TALL reciever. 6′5″ sounds good to me.

  59. these are reallly good WR:
    Ronny Bemudez, 199Lbs
    Richard pelado, 201 Lbs
    Jose vegas iman,203 Lbs
    Gorge junis,176 Lbs
    Xjhsd JSDICKsuckit,200 Lbs
these are fast guys from free agency

  60. wtf baaqi are u like 6 years old?

  61. wtf baaqi are u like 6 years old? or what ure 3 years old fuck dont mess around

  62. Hey do not swear “wtf baaqi” this is a site to discuss not to swear

  63. actually the receivers are from high school

  64. take a defense with our first pick a take sidney rice in the second round he is a great receiver who will be a big play maker

  65. I’m a big Purdue fan and can assure you that Kyle Ingraham would be a great addition to the 49ers. He is actually listed at 6 foot 10 in the Purdue programs! He has great hands but he may be a little rusty since he was deemed academically ineligible this past season. You should be able to get him in the 3rd or 4th round!

  66. why would we pick a wr in the 1st rd, if you look at all the top wr’s in the league, most of them were drafted after the first rd. And I don’t know if you’ve ever heard this or not, but defense wins championships.
My opinion would be to sure up that secondary that gets blasted every time they get on the field.
With the #11 pick in the draft S.F. selects Leon Hall, CB, Michigan.
With him he could be the shut down corner everyone’s looking for. Second round we look Safety, or D-line.
    Just my opinion

  67. oh yeah, FA’s, only one FA worth spending money on and that’s A.Thomas, Balt. He is worth some cash, and imroving our run defense and pressure on the Q.B.
Don’t waste cash on potential FA’s that aren’t going to amount to nothing. ie..Clements. Briggs isn’t going anywhere. The Bears live on defense more than T.O. lives on drama. Save the cash for real FA’s that come up every year.
