Henderson the Next DC?

donnie.jpgWith the firing of Billy Davis the 49ers are now in need of a new defensive coordinator. Early reports are that Mike Singletary is the most likely, but as we reported earlier the strongest candidate appears to be former Jets and Lions defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson. Henderson served as defensive backs coach in Baltimore, when Nolan worked there as defensive coordinator. Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli fired Henderson on Tuesday. So it seems more than a coincidence that the day after Henderson was let go, Davis is fired.

Singletary is still a strong possibility but as we mentioned earlier, Nolan would most likely keep him as assistant head coach so he can help oversee the entire team and not just one area.

  1. Do we really want a guy that led a defense worse than ours? Detroit ranked 28th in the NFL - yikes.

  2. how long was he with the lions?

  3. No doubt, I’d much rather have Singletary that is familiar with our team than a guy that was part of the Lions. While we are at it, let’s hire an assistant coach from the Raiders…I mean, come one.

  4. i’m diggin dom capers

  5. he was only with the lions for a year and before that he was a ravens, and he knows mike the man nolans defense.but i still like dom capers.

  6. i like dom capers too.henderson was released from the ravens as a cornerback coach because at the time there pass defense went down and they had a lot of talent too.

  7. Henderson was also with the Jets and they had a good defense.

  8. i dont think there defense was that good when henderson was there with herman moore.i think henderson is just another billy davis.but that is just my opinion.hermen moore called alot of the defensive plays!

  9. Dom Capers for me also.

  10. yeah i dont think he’s gonna get consideration for any head coaching jobs, so let’s hope the dolphins bring in a guy who will want to bring in his own d coordinator so capers is free

  11. Capers is a candidate for the Miami job, and with their defense ranked 4th even if Capers isn’t the next HC he will most likely be kept around as the DC.

Henderson with the Jets: Henderson went to the Jets as their defensive coordinator in 2004 and oversaw a defense that improved from 21st to seventh in yards allowed and 23rd to fourth in points allowed in his first year in New York. The defense slumped to 12th in yards and 23rd in points in 2005.

  12. Honestly, Miami needs to reorganize everything. There talent level is OK, but nothing is working. I think they´ll be hiring a coach that wants a rebuilding task (whta SABAN was hired to do). Al this to say that Capers is free, and considering Nolans persepective of great coaches (Sullivan and Mike), Capers would be a great fit for the team. I still wouldn´t mind Mike taking over, besides I do think what defense needs right now is stability. We´re going to have 3-5 new starters on our defense next year, that is unstable enough. I´d stick with Mike with that in mind.

  13. yeah as far as I know, Henderson is a Tampa 2 guy… if he has any 3-4 history I’d like to know

  14. Big M…yes Henderson does have history with the 3-4. The 3-4 was ran when he was with Nolan in Baltimore.

  15. Capers has more experience and a much better resume…henderson can come as long as Nolan is REALLY pulling the strings behind the D. However, Capers makes more sense of the three mentioned.

  16. thanks erickson

  17. we need to get merton hanks and deion sanders to coach some of are young CB’S

  18. I KNOW THE PERFECT GUY TO COACH OUR CB’S SAMMY DAVIS

  19. haha he hanks could teach them the chicken dance too . that wouldnt be a bad idea though

  20. Of course Capers is the best choice and better resume, but I don’t see it happening. Hasn’t worked with Nolan in the past and not sure Nolan will wait that long to see what happens with the Miami situation.

  21. richard dent for defensive line coach!

  22. I think that henderson is a good coach,he was good with the jets but the problem with the lions is that they dont have any Key Deffensive players to make the plays!

  23. Did anyone see NFL Total Access today with Coach Nolan as the guest? They showed him up in the booth when he was D Coordinator in Baltimore. Sitting right next to him (on the right side) was Donnie Henderson. It looks like Donnie Henderson was his right hand man in Baltimore.

  24. yes i saw mike nolan half the day on nfl net work.im tired off seeing are defense get burnt by larry johnson on the high lights.thats the only time we get to see the niners on tv.and the reggie bush high lights too.

  25. aint that the truth jerry.last year the only time I saw the niners in magazine was when the niners were at sean alexanders feet when he was going in for a touchdown.

  26. dammit dude! I watch nfl network every day, and I missed the one that had mike nolan on it!that sucks!!

  27. do you think it would be a good idea to have merton hanks and ronnie lott coach some of our young DB’s?
