Audio: How to Acquire a WR

Mike Nolan is on KNBR discussing the wide receiver position. Nolan says free agency is weak at the WR spot and he may look at WR through the draft, but he said there are always players on other teams that are available for trade and that he’ll go that route first. Jerry Porter anyone?

  1. no the raiders can keep all their malcontent underacheiving recievers in chokeland. isnt tyrone calico a fa this year? thats the guy i would go after first. mark crayton from the cowgirls is pretty sick too.

  2. Calico?
    What?!
He couldn’t even step up in comparison to the garbage on that Titan squad.
Porter is cool in my book, I don’t blame him for not wanting anything to do with the Anal-Raiders.
Also, who knows what might happen from here until then, players become unhappy overnight, there may be more names flying out soon then you might think. That’d be great to hear Larry Fitzgerald is unhappy…

  3. What about Bennett from the Titans? I heard he was rumored on the Niners FA list plus he’s a CA native. Calico is an injury waiting to happen I don’t think this guy has put in a full season since coming into the league. Crayton is a career back-up he’s not a #1 target. Even in big D he is behind Owens, Glenn and who know else.

  4. I wouldn’t mind Crayton. He’s pretty good.
None of our receivers would have a chance with TO and Glenn on the roster

  5. Terry Gleen, anyone??

  6. did mike nolan actully say jerry porter or was that last comment put in by someone else.of course crayton would look good when you got terry glenn and terrell oweens are double covered.and if we get terry glenn he is up there in age,but would be good for a year or two.if we get glassico.he will be our like forth or 5th receiver.maybe we will trade our 1st pick for rany moss,t.j. houshmandeh or reggie wayne.romars of jerry porter too.BUT HE SAID HE WOULD GO THAT ROUTE,BUT HE DIDNT SAY HE WONT GET ONE THREW THE DRAFT!!!!

  7. Two little letters that will solve our problems at the wideout position. T.O.

For Turner’s offense to work, you need a Michael Irvin type big receiver. Antonio Bryant proved that he ain’t it.

ALso, with Bryant (who is big, just not good) and T.O., Gore would have had an extra 300-400 yards from the downfield blocking.

  8. bryant is not big,a little tall at 6-1 but he only 185 pounds!in a west cost offense we do need a receiver with yards after the catch.maybe a first and a third round pick to get reggie wayne.

  9. or trade a first and 3rd to or trade the first pick and (antonio bryant) to the raiders to move up and get calvin johnson.

  10. what the hell are u guys thinking? TO should never come back to SF and I cant see us trading Bryant for good value because of his attitude… I could see the Fitzgerald thing being a possibility only because Denny Green is gone, but I really doubt that…. if that does happen it would be after Training Camp starts and he decides Whisenhunt is a homo or something… Jerry Porter seems pretty likely…. he isn’t a deep threat, but we have that in Bryant, and Turner is familiar with him.
Or don’t give up on the draft- it is pretty deep in recievers. Only a few are pro-ready, but there is a lot of raw potential there.

  11. how bout we draft dawayne jarrat from usc … and in the later round go after steve smith .. that would make me happy

  12. i agree with bigm on this one!

  13. T.O. ??????? Are you serious???? Almost no one will question his ability. (Though I loved watching all his dropped passes this year) He’s a proven cancer to the 49ers and Eagles. Me, me, me, all about me and only me, is NOT what Nolan is all about. Thank god.

  14. Seems to me the last few years Nolan has done a pretty good job of masking our intentions for the draft. I’m guessing this is the start of that. What about trading back a couple slots, picking up a second day pick and gett jeff Samardja (?sp) He’s big, plays a lot faster that he looks and he will go get the ball. He is also very good after the catch.

  15. TO IS THE PAST,WE ARE LOOKING TO GET BETTER .WE ALREADY LEARNED FROM HIM ONCE.WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT HIM BACK.TO IS THE PAST. THE NINERS ARE THE FUTURE OF GREATNESS.NOT DEGENERATS LIKE T.O., USED TO BE AND STILL IS.JUST HELP ALEX SMITH,ONE WIDE RECEIVER AND ONE RIGHT OFFENSIVE TACHLE.

  16. (OFFENSIVE TACKLE) I MENT……

  17. NEVER MIND, FOX SPORTS IS SAYING THAT SAMARDZIJA IS PLAYING BASEBALL AND GIVING UP ON FOOTBALL.

  18. I’d give a 4th round pick this year, and a 5th next for Jerry Porter.

  19. And throw in Kwame Harris! LOL

  20. Jerry Porter would look kick ass in gold and red.

T.O. should never even step foot in California again. I hate him.

  21. I KNOW THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN BUT HOW ABOUT FITZGERALD??? =[ NEVEMRIND

  22. Haha, I would trade all of our receivers and a 2nd round for Fitzgerald. :D

  23. HAY ME?I SEEN THAT TOO.KEEP AN EYE ON HIM INCASE HE WANTS TO COMEBACK TO FOOTBALL.

  24. I know it’s off the subject but the 2007 openets are out if anyone cares. I know teams change every year but man, it look brutal!

  25. i cant beleive someone even said t.o.!!! he created this shit hole we were in and are just getting out of. beides his attitude, he is officially the drop king this year, what did he end with, like 18 drops? it was close to 20, by far higher than any other receiver. jerry porter is not worth trading all that for. and i dont know why you would want a guy that after signing a big contract, holds out before the same season (before playing a game on the new contract). he’s a moron. and antonio bryant will be better this year with another good receiver on the other side. not to mention battle is comming along nicely. reggie wayne would be a dream come true but he would cost us probably our whole draft.

  26. are schedule is brutal man damn its gonna be tough as hell

  27. Whatever you may think about TO, to say that he is to blame for the Erickson years is completely ridiculous.

Also, those drops numbers? I’d like to see a link to a reliable source before I believe he had “FAR more than any other receiver”.

  28. yeah samardzija would be perfect fOR THE FORTY NINERS but I guess he likes baseball better,he could be winning superbowls instead of loosing in the playoffs every year when he is with the cubs….

  29. never mention T.O. again.never.

  30. they never said jerry porter in that interview!!!!!

  31. two things about TO, 1) up until this year I said they should have brought him back given the chance, but the time has now passed, I think they should bring in the youngest hungriest receivers possible, the ones that are willing to sacrafice time in the offseason to grow a bond with Smith. 2) His drop numbers are a complete joke, he had 2 “drops” in one game in which the ball hit one hand and would have been spectacular catches ( there is no official drop statistic for the NFL ), even if he had 16 drops in the year ( I can’t remember if he missed any games ), thats one per game. If he makes all those catches he’s the best receiver in the NFL by alot, he didn’t, and thus he’s just in the top 10. He still scares the crap out of defenses, and when he is up for the hall of fame after he has top 5 receiver numbers and doesn’t get in because they think he’s a jerk, it will be hillariously hypocritical with all the general assholes and felons that will be entering the hall at the same time.

I think the only receiver worth a top 11 pick at this point is Johnson, if he fell by some miracle to 6 or worse, then I would say he’s worth the 49ers trading their first, a 3rd and a 6th ( yes this works on the draft chart ), to get him. Otherwise, if they are going to draft a receiver, trade down and take Ginn or Jarret. Otherwise take a defense end and wait till next year.

I want them to take the most PRO READY player they can take in the first and 2nd round. NO MORE PROJECTS. The 19 year old DE is a great project, but there’s no room for projects anymore in the early rounds.

  32. Did someone mention PRO READY?

Do you know who seems really PRO ready?

    LANDRY LANDRY LANDRY!

  33. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bip9KlMxd04

If that video doesn’t get your attention, then I don’t know what will. My favorite part was when the one QB tried to fall down just to avoid the hit that was coming. It’s like Landry is trying to completely take players out of the game…I LOVE IT!

  34. SORRY BRANDON THIS ABOUT RECEIVERS NOT SAFETIES.

  35. Hahaha, since when did these forums stay on topic?

  36. I didn’t know we had so many niner fans in LA…give up on the “let’s draft Jarrett deal”. I am far from an expert, but I can tell any USC fan right now that they would be a fool to think that the niners are going to waste their first round pick on Dwayne Jarrett. GET OVER IT!!! I PROMISE YOU NOLAN WON’T DRAFT HIM…LET IT GO!!!! Sorry, I probably just sounded like an ass, but come on…we need to be realistic and start thinking about defense in the draft. All of you quit talking shit to Brandon…I don’t even know the guy, but I agree with him that Landry is a great fit for the niners ( I would take Branch first, but not much else). Creighton from the cowgirls actually would be a great fit…I know everyone is going to think I am an idiot for saying that, but I would take him over Porter…just based on the fact that he is low key, doesn’t NEED attention, isn’t a prima donna, and is willing to go across the middle. If we got Creighton it would be a big pick up because it would put pressure on Bryant to remain “da man”, Battle to “stay in the offense” (making him work even harder, and anyone else to realize that if they want to make it on this team then they need to get with the program and step up…otherwise go to the raiders!!!!

  37. Thank you sir, I’ve been preaching defense for ages it seems but people can’t get over the whole Ginn and Jarrett hump. Don’t get me wrong, Calvin Johnson would be a godsend, but that’s NOT happening. Jarrett seems like a dumbass and Ginn would get folded in the NFL with the big boys. Overall, the WR’s in every aspect (draft, FA, etc.) are…not that great. The entire state of wide recievers in the league in general currently are mediocre. Sure, you have some studs lingering, but only very few teams truly have that coveted #1 receiver. So, I just think we should keep what we have, let Battle develop more, have Bryant stay off da’ booze and get someone reliable, yes RELIABLE. Plus, I think a lot of fans are forgetting that once Smith hits his stride EVERY receiver is going to look better and PLUS has everyone forgot that we just drafted a receiver, some guy named Vernon Davis? It’s getting blown out of proportion. Nolan has said time and again that we are going primarily defense in the draft and he’s a straight shooter, unlike Saban (loser). Oh and for my fans…

    LANDRY LANDRY LANDRY!

  38. hey im not from california or a usc fan.and i like how you guys critize players that havent even worked in a combine or even worked out for a team YET. and yes i remember we draftING a “TIGHT END”)NOT A RECIEVER, WHO TAKES PRIDE IN BLOCKING TOO.THEIR IS A DIFFERANCE.AND WE ALSO DRAFTED MANNY LAWSON TOO,BUT I GUESS YOU GUYS FORGOT ABOUT THAT TOO.AND IN TWO OR THREE YEARS FROM NOW IF DWAYNE JARRETT HAS HUNDRED AND FIFTY RECEIVING YARDS AND 2 TDS AGAINST US.AND I THINK FOR PEOPLE KNOCKING ON HIM ALREADY WILL MODIVATE HIM AND GINN AND HO EVER ELSE YOU WANT TO DUMP ON AND YOU WOULD PROBLEY SAY WE SHOULD HAVE DRAFTED HIM.AND I UNDER STAND THAT BRANDON IS LANDRYS BUTT BUDDY .BUT THERE HAVE BEEN RUMORS OF ATLANTA AT NUMBER TEN OR THE REDSKINS TAKING HIM.SO HE PROBLEY WONT EVEN FALL TO US.UNLESS WE TRADE UP.WE WILL PROBLEY GO DEFENSE IN THE FIRST ROUND.AND REMEMBER WE GOT A COUPLE OF SAFETIES LAST YEAR IN THE LATE ROUNDS.IT WILL BE CORNER OR DEFENSIVE TACKLE UNLESS LANDRY FALLS TO US.AND CRAYTON WOULD SUCK AS A NUBER ONE RECEIVER.AND DALLAS WILL KEEP HIM ANYWAY,T.O. AINT GETTING ANY YOUNGER OR TERRY GLENN.I GUESS NOW I WILL WAIT AND SEE IF SOMEONE WRITES BIG STORY WITH CAPITAL CURSE WORDS TO TRY SCARING US.

  39. -Capitalization is overrated.

-Davis is a receiver and you, i and everyone else knows it. We wouldn’t have got him, if he was just gonna be a blocker.

-So what if Ginn and/or Jarrett are good. I hope they will be, for them to get drafted so high.

-That would suck hard if someone grabbed Landry before us, but I’m sure Nolan & co. will make it up to us in the long run.

-I am quite aware of Lawson being drafted. I’m actually the only niner fan I know that was more pumped up about him than Davis.

-Crayton would suck as a #1, but he’s doing alright as a #3. He’s a Cowboy though, so I personally don’t care for the guy.

-You seem like an alright guy, why all the fuss?

  40. ON YOUR FIST STATEMENT ABOUT DAVID,WE RUN THE BALL MORE THAN WE THROW IT,HE BLOCKS MORE THAN HE CATCHES THE BALL,AND HE LINES UP NEXT TO THE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN SO THAT MAKES HIM A TIGHT END ASK JOEY PORTER THAT. ANDJUST BECAUSE WE DRAFTED VERNON DAVIS IN THE FIRST ROUND THE LAST DRAFT.DOESNT MEAN WE CANT DRAFT OFFENNSE IN THE FIRST ROUND,IN THIS DRAFT COMING UP.IM HOPING TO GET ANOTHER GOOD RECEIVER BECAUSE OF GORE AND HIS BIG MOUTH ABOUT THE 2200 YARD SEASON .TEAMS ARE GOING TO BE MORE FOCUSED ON STOPPING THE RUN. THAT WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PASS EVENLLY THIS YEAR IF WE ARE TO WIN.IM HOPING FOR A GOOD RIGHT OFFENSIVE TACKLE.THERE ARE LIKE A THOUSAND OTHER PLAYERS AND ALL I HEAR IS LANDRYS NAME.

  41. all signs point to landry if you think about it,nolan coaching in the senoir bowl(south)landry plays for LSU,you do the math, keith lewis might not play safety this year,in the mock draft landry was picked 11, (guess who) will have the eleventh pick in the draft,so if all those signs don’t point to landry I don’t know what does.

  42. all im sayin is we need defense, and probably the best prospect for the defense is LaRon landry.so don’t be suprised.

  43. EXACTLY.

I’ve been saying those points too and when it comes to overall defensive presence, Landry might be the best in the draft.

  44. I don’t think nolan is too ignorant to pass up landry in the draft.lets just all pray.

  45. AND ON THIS TOPIC THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT RECEIVERS,JACKASSES!!!!

  46. I had a dream last night that Larry Fitzgerald was playing for the Niners. Needless to say, it was a wet dream. Cardinals have 3 great WR’s, maybe Nolan could get them to give us one…maybe persuade him with a sad puppy face. Or maybe a wink and the gun-hand gesture. That HAS to work! I’d love to create a trade scenario, but player wise we have nothing to trade and it’d take quite the amount of draft picks, so that’s out of the question…sooooo, maybe there is something? Ideas?

  47. All this reciever talk is great. If you guys trully watched the games what we need is a Gaines Adams. Think about all the plays on D that people got to run around in the pocket. Like in the Packers Game that we needed.
