03.04.07 — The North County Times (San Diego) is reporting that according to sources who spoke with Porter on Friday. The Bakersfield native expects to visit with San Francisco in coming days.

03.03.07 – KGET.com has a news article on their site talking about free agent Joey Porter looking for a new team. Porter is from Bakersfield, which is about 4 hours from San Francisco, and an even shorter flight. Well the article mentions that landing possibilities for Porter are the 49ers and the Chargers. Here is what Porter had to say in response to those two places.

Oh and by the way, I’m not sure the Chargers have that much cap room available to land Porter. So Nolan if you are reading this make him an offer.

That would be a great move! he would be the leader for our ‘no-name’ defense….Getting Lelie is another brilliant move by Nolan & co. The guy can flat-out run and catch the bomb. He will stretch the field, and have Sully to coach him. Sully is drooling over the possibility of having a real wide-out to coach for a change. BTW, this guy is a fine athlete, and not a drunk……I can’t believe what’s happening here!! Getting all of thses good players. It’s like a dream come true. There’s no question that this guy’s bark is bigger than his bite…however, guys like him give a team personality. I think the 9ers should go for it, even if he’s not really a long-term investment. They should be careful to avoid the hype and alknowledge how overrated he is so that they don’t pay him too much.

I say Stallworth still because I believe he is the more talented receiver (when healthy). Also, Erickson, when do you personally we will hear anything about the Gore contract because I love the signing (like christmas) ,but we need to resign Gore…he is a franchise back. Furthermore, if we let it go until next year…things could get ugly.
But, as for Porter…bring him in FOR THE RIGHT PRICE!! Lelie is a good #2, Battle is a phenominal #3, so who is going to be our number one because Lelie isn’t THAT receiver…he just isn’t.

Joey Porter would make our defense a hundred percent better. If Jerry Porter wants to move across the Bay and can be had for draft choices, I wouldn’t turn him away but I don’t think he’s as great as some folks think.
I keep thinking about last year’s team at 7-9 and just with free agency we’ve got talent for another 2, 3 wins. I see Seattle as slipping, St. L as about the same. Maybe this will be Arizona’s time to move up, but I’m looking at the division and thinking that we definitely have a shot at it next year. A great draft and we should be in the playoffs. I think that Nolan and the others in the 9ers’ front office are doing a great job.
Joey Porter is SUCH A FORCE…Erickson, what type of contract to you THINK he is looking for. He would instantaneously become a defensive leader. He would be perfect to mold the young talent. I say a 3-4 year deal would be good.

free agency has been great. we’re improving our roster much faster than any team in our divison. u think st. louis wanted bennett so that they can have a chance against our secondary? 3 stud receivers against our 3 stud corners? they wont have a chance. arizona might, but i still doubt that.
Eriickson, you should update the “Adalius Thomas Coming To Town” from “all signs indicating him signing with the Patriots” to confirmation he has actually done so. And then crooss out the line on the thread about “Adalius Thomas expects to visit 49ers.” ESPN (John Clayton) has confirmed the signing.
About Joey Porter, in a head-to-head comparsison of him and Adalius Thomas, the ex-Steeler comes out well. Although both turn thirty this year, (Porter in March and Thomas in August) Porter has 11 1/2 more career sacks to Thomas (60 career sacks verses 38 1/2 career sackts). Also, Porter would like at least $5 million (the figure he would have received for 2007 with the Steelers before he was released) or more in his next contract. This obviously fits well within the $15-$20 million remining on this year’s salary caop of the 49ers.

For those who are worrying about Gore leaving, he is tied up until something like 2010. And he can be given new contract without too much impact on the salary cap. The only way that Gore isn’t playing for the Niners is if he pulls a Ricky Williams. If he plays in the NFL, it’ll be for the Niners.
So get Porter and if there’s money get another receiver. But remember that we’ve got lots of draft picks too. Should be a great training camp. Hope there’s a few good offensive linemen, specifically a right tackle, in the draft.

This IS THE CRUNCH TIME…if we aren’t the first team Porter meets with then expect him to be gone. I highly doubt Porter goes to Chargers, but every team on the east coast wants him as well. This IS the finishing touch…we need to finish strong in free agency.

I would take Porter. Have not heard Nolan or anybody say anything. He would definately bring energy. He would have to stick to scheme because Winborn was same type of guy (energy wise) and Nolan canned him. Porter will do what Thomas would have been asked to do. Joey Porter would be the bridge to our premier speed rusher (whether that be Lawson in time or someone not on the roster). We have the people in place to make it happen (Nolan, Sigletary, & our new D-Cord). We need our own Merriman or Demarcus Ware. Porter also brings off field stuff in terms of talking trash in the papers and causing at times controversy.

nines have around $13 mill in cap space. about $8-10 mill has to kept to sign all the draft picks. so dont count on any major signings unless they trade some of their picks. in that case, the next big time signing will not come until some time in april…
and by making nate clements their #1 priority, nolan is eyeing a linebacker w/ the 11th pick (i.e. P. Willis). they wont take a de because a 3-4 requires more “beefy” ends, like what the niners have now - carriker wont cut it, and gaines adams / jamaal anderson will be gone by then
with the great wr depth in the draft, the niners will probably be able to get meachem, steve smith, or anthony gonzalez with the 2nd round pick.

wow, wow…Super Bowl run? let’s be realistic here. They signed a CB and replaced their best WR with an at times flaky guy…this team was not even playoff caliber last year…they lost 41-o to the Chiefs. I’m as big of a 49er fan as anybody, but this year the goal is the playoffs and hopefully winning the NFC West. And those are auspicious goals. If they get above .500 I’d be thrilled.
with a good draft, the niners could have one of the best defenses in the nfl. tought to say now for sure, but with a good pass rusher in there, they should be very solid at worst. i’m all for getting one receiver on the first day, with the rest of the picks going to the defensive side of the ball. with gore, smith, and davis, the niner offense should put up enough points to be in every game if we have a good defensive draft.

I agree Kwame is awful, but I think there’s more pressing issues than the line. I know the o-line is probably the most important part of any team, overall it’s a pretty good line right now. after one more year of playing with eachother, it should be even better (i.e. everyone on the line realizing they need to expect to have to give Kwame some help). I think with a good defensive draft, with that young defense, we shouldn’t need any more major help there in the coming years. the offense is good enough right now if we have a good defense. keep running the ball to the left and then next year fill in the holes, like right tackle and maybe a wideout. seems to me though that most of the good young wideouts have been drafted in the end of the first day of the draft.
plus, with a defense that keeps the opposing offense of the field, we’ll be playing against tired defenses. imagine what gore will do against exhausted defenses. even kwame can do an average job against a tired defense in the second half.

i live down in s.d. and after watching the chargers rebuild, i think they’re a good model to follow. they haven’t been overly worried about the offense. they had the t.e., qb, and obviously tomlinson, but they built their defense. their pass rush is amazing. nothing like a sack to change momentum. if the niners can concentrate on that, with davis, smith, and gore on offense, in the coming years they could follow the same path as the chargers. we already have a better secondary then the chargers, we just need the pass rush to crush the morale of the opposing offenses, then let gore do his thing.

Forget Stallworth, Porter would suit a much more important need. Lelie and Battle complement one another perfectly as Lelie can stretch the field and Battle can go over the middle and make the tough catch. Plus we have VD, Gore, and Walker as weapons too. Sign Porter up for 3 to 4 years. He will add even more fire to our newfound D!

Dom, I would like to see Delanie Walker get a chance to win a spot at WR. He’s shown flashes of being a playmaker during the games he was healthy to play in. I think the guy has a chance to be a big time playmaker if given the chance.

The thing is that it will be a BIG REACH for Meachum to STILL be there when we pick at #43 (10th in the 2nd)…SO we go with MAYBE Sidney Rice….I’m not sold on him and he WON’T make an immediate impact. there is a reciever in the draft that not many people are talkin about and he is Dallas Baker (the touchdown maker)of the National Champ Florida Gators and he to me would be a solid pick later in the second or third round..for my opinion on #11 pick is we get Alan Branch to be tudored by the Great Bryant Young. We dont need a socalled #1 reciever we just need more protection for Alex on the line,,,we have solid recivers and backs to take care of the rest. 49er Faithfull to the end
The problem with The receivers in the second round is that they are all going to 6′0″ unless Sidney Rice is still available….which is highly unlikely.
meachum wont be there in 2nd round. we would most likely have to trade up for meachum. the player i want is willis, i think hes gonna be sick but maybe a reach at 11 so a combo of trading down with 11 to draft willis and trading up wth 2nd round and like 4th round to draft meachum would get us two solid players
