Oliver Done for the Year

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the injury that sidelined Melvin Oliver on Tuesday turned out to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Surgery has yet to be scheduled, but the 23-year-old Oliver is expected to miss the 2007 season.

  1. Damn, that sucks for him.

  2. DAMN,i really thought he would have had a good year, this year. Now i know why they signed Rayburn. The preseason hadn’t even started yet and we got someone on I.R. already.I hope the injury bug doen’t hit anyone else on the team this year.

  3. I had high hopes for him too Paul, but the positive part is B.Y. and Douglas are healthy right now and i guess we will se more of McDonald,Cohen,Rayburn and Fields.

  4. Yeah, but Oliver had a lot of promise to him and we need him. D line is our weakest spot STILL. YES, we DID make it better, but if you look at each particular unit on our team and you have to STILL say that D line is our weakest. If we can’t hurry the quarterback or flush him out of the pocket then we are not going to be doing as well as we could be. WE HAVE A GREAT SECONDARY NOW, but they would be doing A LOT BETTER if our line was forcing the quarterback to make fast decisions and get rid of the ball quickly.

  5. dam i like that kid i hope he comes back strong next year i hate too see any one get hurt all ready but i think some one will step up GO NINERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. It’s a shame a dam shame

  7. our d-line needs to start tearing thru opponents.

without penetration, we have masturbation - for the last 4 year’s we’ve been playing with ourselves.

  8. Not good news, but Oliver would be playing a whole new role in our new defense so we don’t know how much of a factor he would have been. I think we’ll be fine with all of the additions to our D-Line - Franklin, Rayburn, Cohen, and McDonald, and we still got BY, Douglas, Fields, and Sopoaga. In my opinion the D-Line looks promising. For a 3 man line, we have 8 guys that can contribute to the rotation. The only difference now is that we aren’t 3 deep at each spot, but you never know who will step up.

  9. Well said Big M.

  10. It’s a shame, but at least it happend before the season started. And he should be well rested for next year, when B.Y. retires. Or maybe he will be o.k and can play in the playoffs.

  11. Oliver is a douche bag! What happended? Was he out of shape?

  12. oliver get stoned takes the pain away naturally

  13. Good job Nolan getting them prepared for battle take out the weakest links now and only the strong will survive.NO PUSSYS ALLOWED………

  14. The last three guys are all the same person along with ninersmania. They have nothing worth listening too.And are probely NO ADAMS,NO RAYBURN!!!!!.And that shit isn’t funny about Oliver getting stoned. My brother got killed in a car wreck and the other guy was stoned too.

  15. thats too bad what happened to him but its not that significant we have to concentrate more on our problem of not having anymore studs at dline by next season when BY leaves. we did good on our LBs, hopefully we can get a good flow this year and start the foundation for one of the best LB corps in the league with lawson and willis. we still need depth at cb and safety. but definetly the most glaring need for hte 9ers is our lack of any real studs at WR. If you look at any superbowl caliber team (excluding patriots of last season), every one of them has a stud at WR. d-jax is a number 2 at best and ashley lelie can be slot. Our most glaring weakness is that alex smith was in his second year and hasnt yet reached anywhere close to his expectations. hopefully he gains a connection with vernon davis and establishes him as the number one target. and btw fuck you person who commented before weed is the shit biiiiiitch

  16. are you frekin kidddin me!the whole 2007 year??? I hope this injury crap doesnt start again…..remember newberry an his bull…I hope this injury stays isolated

  17. i agree with you yungjoe415 about,we need to find another stud receiver.I hope Jason Hill turns out to be one,and hope he starts a couple games but it will probley be Battle if D.J. or Lelie get injured. But I heard that Hill,Battle and Brown will be tried at kick and punt returner.I also want to know what Mike Robinsons role is going to be this year. And i also hope Staley starts over Harris this season.

  18. I feel ya, A True Niner Fan…Last year was a decent year without injuries. But before that we had three years of nothing but people being injured or on I.R.,I hope it doesnt start again. But they were the Ericson years. So i hope they are all behind us.

  19. You guys gotta be kiddin me!! We have a stud at WR, D-JAX. D Jackson was always the #1 WR on the Seahawks for the last 5 years. He is the reason they went to the superbowl 2 years ago. Hell did the Patriots even have a WR that notched a 1,000 yards? No I don’t think so. Damn man at least wait to see what our guys can do before you talk sh!t about em!!

  20. d1800,D.J. isnt the only reason they went to the superbowl. He was injured about six to eight games that season too. They got there by luck and they didn’t win it any way.And we dont run the same kind of offense that the PATS run.And talking about the PATS how many receivers did they just get this past year.So they know it takes a couple of good receivers to throw to.And the reason they dont have a one thousand yard receiver is because they have a quarterback who can spread the ball around.

  21. Well flesh eater, since we do run the ball so damn well with gore, hicks and company. Then we don’t need to spread the ball out like PATS, it didn’t get them nowhere last year “anyway” hell Pittsburg only had one stud, no 1 solid WR and they won the superbowl. By luck!! Hell did you forget about our TE? How many damn wideouts do we need just to have a solid passing game? Do you even have faith in our WR’s? If not then you on the wrong damn website. I like our chances with Arnaz Battle, rookie Hill, Lelie and D-JAX. The Chargers didn’t have a”stud” WR but they had a kick ass type of season because they didn’t need a damn “stud” WR with a great RB and a bad ass TE.As long as our solid wideouts do thier job then we will have a “kick ass” type of season too. Damn man where are the REAL NINER FANS?

  22. im saying we need stud WR to alleviate the stress off our QB incase you never seen lelie play he got butter fingers is injury prone and cry baby hopefully he lives up to his first round expectations but until than hes a slot reciever at best djax gets injured a lot and if he cant stay healthy than were left with nobody yea ill give it to you VD is a fucking beast and hes gonna be one of hte best Tight ends in the league sometime soon but my point is that if they see we aint got any real options for WR and if teams just stop fearing our deep ball altogether their gonna make sure they get double coverage on VD. im trying to say we need to spread defenses out and have teams just as scared of our passing game as our running game cuz we all know gore is a fucking beast but what we dont know is how soon his career will be over with those knee problems its cool to be supportive but you also have to be realistic we NEED one more option for smith thats gonna have most DB’s shitting bricks. Quarter backs win big games and if we dont develop our quarterback properly than the fucking cowboys are gonna steal the new record for most super bowls and i dont want those closet homos taking home another one of our titles fuck the cowboys fuck the patriots (if they win another fucking superbowl!!!!) and fuck your mother d1800

  23. I like A.BATTLE,J.Hill and (and no i didnt forget?) Vernon Davis. And before we where talking about the Pats,Not the Steelers. And there receiver stayed healthy and won the superbowl.AND JUST BECAUSE I DONT AGREE WITH YOU ON ONE WIDE RECEIVER IM NOT A “REAL”NINERS FAN? The Colts won the superbowl “this past year”and had they have two good receivers too,and so did we. And the Pats did have Troy brown who was pretty good too.Plus the Pats know they are gonna have to compete with the Colts this year and got a shitload of pretty good wide outs. And i dont see the Chargers winning the superbowl anytime soon unless the Pats get bombed by the injury bug and they always seem to have two good tight ends too.

  24. yungjoe415 muthafuka you talk real big shit on the computer right? This is football talk punk and FUCK YO MOTHER CUZZ I’M SURE EVERYBODY ELSE HAS!! You just a punk muthafuka hiding behind a damn computer and can’t talk about sports without disrespecting a person mother or some shit. I tell you what you can do is give me yo damn address and I will be there on the next thing smoking just to beat yo stupid, none football knowledge, punk ass. YOU PUNK BITCH!!! ANYTIME YOU WANT TO SEE A FUCKIN LOSER JUST LOOK IN THE MIRROW. MAN SHUT THE FUCK UP.Just like a faggot as fan,”D-JAX gets injured alot”,”cry baby ass Lelie” you the same muthafuka that was happy when we got them WR’s and now you and flesh talking shit.”how long does Gore really has” you talking like Gore is a fuckin 33 year old or something.PATS aint go do shit this year muthafuka!!

  25. NO DEFENSE WINS BIG GAMES YOU DUMB ASS BITCH!!!

  26. I’M pretty sure the Ravens won a superbowl with defense ask Trent Dilfer and the Giants.

  27. d1800,Im gonna recomand you a good massage/ sex theripist Email address. ooooooooo snap you have it,it’s your mothers address!

  28. Just like little ass kids and wasn’t nobody talking to you fake ass john madden. yeah i’m sure your grandma lick balls and sniff ass crack right?oooooooooo snap you have it,your grandma’s a hooker!

  29. Sad to hear the bad news about Oliver going down for the year, and normally this would be bad news for us on our depth chart but Nolan and Co. have plenty of depth at that position with Fields, MacDonald and new guy Rayburn. That’s why you never rest on improving your team…Damn Nolan is the MAN!!

  30. Yes, we have depth, but Oliver gave me the impression that he was going to be somewhat of a difference maker this year. He progressed A LOT towards the end of the year.

  31. oooooooooo snap that was the best comeback i ever heard.NOT!!!!!I’M disappointed in you and like your grandma was when she could feel nothing but cobwebs when you fuckd her.Another disapointed costomer.you better just stick to your bad jokes.

  32. P.S your mom sends love and kisses after my sloppy seconds and cumfilled lipps.

  33. Ryan… Oliver showed promise, but our defense now requires two-gapping, which we haven’t seen Oliver do yet. I really doubt that he would have started this year anyways… plus he’ll be one more guy that we’ll have next year when BY could possibly be gone

  34. If Oliver and McDonald (since they both only in the mid 270s) could gain another 10 pounds they would make good “D.E.’s” in a 3-4.( in my opinion anyway)

  35. WE SOHULD ALL TALK FOOTBALL ON THIS SITE AND ALL STICK TOGETHER IF YOUR A NINER FAN TREAT OTHER NINERS FANS WITH RESPECT CANT WE ALL JUST GET A LONG!
    GO NINERS!!!

  36. WERE GOING TO BE GREAT THIS YEAR I FEEL IT

    GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. J_Bigestninersfan, I WISH IT COULD BE LIKE THAT!But there will always be a couple of people talking somecrazy stuff.Thats why i try not to get to crazy when someone disagrees about something. As you can see when di800 and i disagreed about D.J. i tried to be mature about it,no cursing no mamma/grandma jokes or death threats.

  38. d1800 …….i ment sorry about that.

  39. not d1800 ,i ment Big M who i was talking too!

  40. We should move pat estes from tackle back to tight end and use him as a extra tight end in running goal line sitsuations.

  41. Corey Simon Any1

  42. Do we still have the cash to do that?

  43. i pretty sure we still do Shuttle.

  44. Corey Simon would be a good option, but he hasn’t been released and I don’t know if we could afford him after we sign the draft picks.

  45. [...] Oliver Done for the Year The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the injury that sidelined Melvin Oliver on Tuesday turned out to be a torn […] [...]

  46. Your right Ryan,I forgot we have to signing both first round picks. And we just signed Rayburn too.

  47. Does anyone think that Jeff Ulbrich or derick smith might get cut or released before the season starts since we drafted Patrick Willis?

  48. d1800 & yungjoe415 & john madden - you are the kobayashis & joe chestnuts of the competitive poo burger eating contests. i hope that your pets are striken with tuberculosis & your televisions sets become frozen on the lifetime network. peace be with us. - Keena

  49. Paul, I don’t think so man. They are worth depth and experience if nothing else.

  50. I would rather have this injury happen now than 8 wks into the season. Players that would have been behind Oliver in the rotation will get more reps in OTAs and mini camp. Don’t worry people, Oliver is solid, but we can fill his spot easily; especially this early on.

  51. Smith and Ulbrich will both be on the roster this season. As far as next season goes, …..probably not both. Smith will retire soon, once Willis takes his spot. Smith has contributed to our team well, in the time that he’s been here. But I won’t be sorry to see him go, when we have a beast like Willis to take his spot on the roster.

  52. So is Willis projected to even start? if not, how much time will he see (if at all)?

  53. Patrick Willis is a fucking animal. If you don’t think that he will be better than Smith a year from now, you’re crazy. I think that Nolan will let Smith start at the begining of the season, but Willis is already nipping at his heels, and he will have devoured him and taken his position by next year…..I guarantee it.

  54. We had the best draft in the league this year. Even our reaches seem like they will pan out. Nolan can deal with our late picks that have character issues. He’ll smack em in the face and tell em to quit their bitchin. Fuck all the haters on this site, the 49ers are going to be the team to beat in the NFC West this year.

  55. Jerry, don’t forget ( I know you haven’t forgotten) but we haven’t signed Jason Hill, McDonald, CLayton, Staley, or Willis. That is going to eat up some cap room. It would be nice if we could get Simon because Simon, Franklin, and BY would be fine with me considering the back up help they would have. However, we do need to cut a couple of players. Nolan is the man who gets paid to make that decision, but we need to get rid of the old ways and the players who don’t have the Nolan stamp on them. Granted, some of them he didn’t pick and are STILL GOOD, but there are a couple of d linemen that need to go because they just aren’t up to par with the new talent level. The front three is crucial even if it isn’t a sexy position. It STILL is the one that makes a HUGE difference.

  56. I just hope we didn’t make a mistake by NOT using our second rounder on Ugoh. Yeah, I know that points wise it makes sense because we traded a second rounder for a first, but I think Ugoh would have REALLY solidified our line. With that pick that is who I would have taken and IT IS ALSO EXACTLY who the colts took. However…..WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW???

  57. Plus, after we lose Allen ( I hope we don’t) we are going to have a BIG hole there and I don’t know if Staley will be ready yet. Also, Smiley will be gone after next year…..I think Baas will solve that problem, but I would have liked someone who is fresh and new who would have put a fire under Jonas “My pinky hurts so I am going to sit a few games out” Jennings butt. I think Ugoh would have done that or that tackle from Texas Tech that the Lions statched up…Manuel Ramirez.

  58. Well RYAN,I can see us getting rid of a few players like the gaurd nick steitz,we signed him when heittman went down and C.J.Brewer,B.J.Tucker,Taylor Jacobs,John Syptak and Damone Duckett will be just a few i can see us getting rid of right of hand.

  59. Plus i wonder who is going to win the third quarterback position between Shaun Hill and Luke Getsey.

  60. Paul Jr…..you have a great point about third string QB Shaun Hill looked like a solid back up when playing, but that QB had AWESOME numbers in college. I think Hill will win based on the fact that Nolan is going to want to show Alex Smith that no one is breathing down his neck and there will be NO controversy. I can see it now if Smith were to sprain his ankle and miss a game and Getsy were to tear it up (provided that he even got in there) there would be all sorts of nonsense talk. However, that won’t be the case. You heard it here…..THIS IS SMITH’S YEAR!!! He WILL be pro bowl material THIS YEAR!!! He has the weapons, the o line, and the running game. IT WILL BE HIS YEAR!!

  61. The other compitition im looking forward two is the back up runningback position,Maurice Hicks,Thomas Clayton and Michael Robinson.

  62. looing forward too…….i ment

  63. Yeah I can’t to see how our FB’s put up some numbers. EAT A DICK JOHN MADDEN!!!

  64. Alex is our man. He will be a mature quarterback this year. He has gone through the young stages; now is his time to shine.. Lead us to the promised land young man. We are more than willing to go; If our defense can lead us towards an exciting year.

  65. OOOOOOOO SNAP i JUST SAW YOUR MOTHER ON BUSTYUGLYWOMEN.COM!!

  66. I hope he does mature this year Bobby Boucher. This will also be Trent Dilfers last year too.I dont see our fullbacks putting up some huge numbers because Morris never had more than 10 catches and only ran it twice last year.

  67. Iheard Smith is having a bit of trouble complelting the long ball.He has the strength, he just can’t seem to complete them.

  68. Hasn’t he always had trouble throwing the deep ball?Didn’t A.Battle and i ferget the who the other receiver was.But when they brought in Alex Smith in for a private workout before the draft that A.BATTLE and the other receiver said that Jeff Garcia had more arm strength than Alex.

  69. That kind of sucks man. I hope that won’t matter to much, I mean we don’t always have to go deep. We have a good running game, and we run the west coast offense anyway. Little dinks and dump offs are hard to cover. It would be nice to see a few long completions every now and again though.

  70. We did pretty good with Garcia and he didnt have great arm strength. What worries me the most was that last seatle game where he completed two of ten passes in that rain storm in the first half. But he did comeback nicely when the rain stoped in the second half though.because he has small hands i heard.

  71. d1800 ill peel your cap back you flamer ass nigga youll get caught with 2 slugs in your neck watch you bitch slide through any day eddy and steiner KOalition cuzzin come through its cookies on minez son 415 867 9521 U C IT CALL ME IF THERES A DILEMA

  72. arguing online is like racin in the special olympics, even if u win, ur still retarded

  73. this sucks…i also thought he would have a good season….but right now just work on getting healthy and get him next year

  74. Nothing new?No other interest in anyone? Did Tennessee ever resign Rein Long?Ithink he would be a decent defensive end in a 3-4.

  75. Abusing the semi-colon Bobby? lol… I have a dog; his name is Oliver. or, I have a dog. His name is Oliver. I prefer the second; I dont like the first. Who is this guy talking about putting caps in people? What is this?
Does anyone notice that Smith seems to need to step forward quite a bit during his throws? I am worried that in game situations, if that gets disrupted, we may have some problems. He has great arm strength and agility, and no doubt intelligence, but can he be fluid enough in game situations to be a great quarterback. I like the idea of throwing up the middle. However, the need to step forward so much is very recognizable, especially to linebackers, so the quick throw needed to “thread the needle” in the middle of the field may be problematic and prone to interceptions. I noticed very few passes up the middle in the past few seasons. Any thoughts?

  76. Here is a thought, I hear that this may be Dilfers last season. I say bring in someone that could push Smith and maybe even challege him, someone like Culpepper. Only a thought. It will never happen, but what if?

  77. And i wish we had a good backup that could play instead of one who is on the downside of his career and is more of a coach.

  78. Yeah that is pretty noticable, but it’s such a quick step it really isn’t gonna make a difference… quarterbacks should always be stepping up into the pocket and into their throws anyways. It’s actually good mechanics and shows his confidence that the pocket won’t collapse on him in that split second where he steps up. Also, that step creates more velocity in his throw, which compensates for the defender reading his release.

As far as the passes over the middle, AB has really been our only reliable guy over the middle. The main reason though, is the system. Our offense is built on the run, forcing the defense to play most of their defenders in the box. It wouldn’t make much sense to throw over the middle when the linebackers aren’t spread. Last season, the backers were bunched to stop the run, so if the play was a pass, it would take them that much longer to spread their coverage enough to leave the middle open. By that time, the ball should already be out of Smith’s hand. You might see a throw over the middle on a 3rd and long, or possibly right after the defense has given up a few big run plays to the outside. Next season, though, we should see passes all over the field. With a healthy VD and a new receiving corps, the defense is going to have to be honest.

  79. About Smith’s deep ball:
Turner constantly praised Alex Smith’s accuracy on the deep ball, and we all saw his arm strength in that Seattle game with flat footed deep throw at the end of the 3rd quarter to AB. We wouldn’t have taken him #1 if he had a weak arm.

  80. It’s not his arm stregnth I’m worried about, it’s the accuracy on the long throws.I’m sure he’ll be just fine. I’m just saying I would like to see more completions down the field.

  81. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

  82. clickCRACKPUNKS!man shut the fuck you punk bitch you ain’t gangsta,if you a crip then you a crab, you a blood then you slob muthafucka!! stop giving out yo phone number ain’t no faggots on this site, get yo daddy dick out yo mouth punk bitch the only thing you peel back is yo damn finger nails crack click or click crack punk bitch.

  83. man I called that wac ass number and it was the number to pizza hut.clic whatever you a real scarey muthafuka man!!! giving out the wrong number huh?? punk boy

  84. also, the third year is the most crucial year for a QB..thats when analysts and all the ‘experts’ really grade QB from when they got drafted..Smiths rookie season was horrible(1 TD 11 Int with some considerable playing time, didnt start until later in the season)and remember playing time=experience, which is very important in any QB’s progress. So his second season he improves dramatically(16 TDs 16 Ints but 4 or 5 of em were from swatted passes, 2980 yds or something like that, plus hes at the helm the WHOLE season[experience, experience]throw in a few rushing TDs). So now if he does better this year or even does almost the same(minus the INTs and improves completion%), which I think hell do even better with all our weapons, then he’ll pan out..in other words, dont worry. He’ll pan out. Also I can see Vernon playing quite a bit of Wideout..you just really have to take advantage of his skill set..I could(in my eyes) even see him as our “no. 1 WR”.. his speed is just out there…he’s probably faster than DJax..and hes a stud..freaky athletic theres a whole lot we can do with VD just think about it fellas

  85. Wow!!! When did Oliver become such a key player on this team?….. Everyone ok now, it shouldnt be to hard to replace him. Good lord.

  86. Bigbig, well stated guy. I can sleep a lot better tonight.

  87. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6897650 check out where we are ranked 12th

  88. mike niner fan,of course they got seatle rated 6th.so that means they got to beat us once and that aint gonna happen!

  89. injuries are part of the game.u just cant help it.i’m pretty sure will find ways to get over it and have one hell of a season.beware NFC West

  90. c-rag i dont know wich one is worst you calling the number or you thinking the other guy was actually going to leave his real number. peronaly i would have left the number to a police dept or an alcohol prevention number.

  91. dumb niggers

  92. extremely inapropiate there!!Ye it sucks about injuries. but what the hell,if we didnt have injuries, we wouldnt know if our backups are any good.
