AN: Clements Unchanged by the Money

sf-logo.pngI’m going to try a new feature and see if it flies. I’m gonna call it Around Ninerland (unless someone can think of something better), it is basically like Monday Morning Punter, but not on Mondays. So without further adieu…

- Nate Clements says money no big deal. [If that is the case, then Nate if you are reading this could you spare a dime?]

- Walt “Anti-Kwame” Harris is set to play for the first time this preseason against the Bears. [Now if we could just find a way for the other Harris not to.]

- Manny Lawson: The Forgotten One [Don't worry Manny we haven't forgotten you.]

- Gore gets more time to eat his cookies [F the preseason, Frank you the man.]

- Franklin feels he’ll be ready for the Cardinals [Don't rush coming back, but we can't wait to see your fatass in the middle.]

- Memories, all alone in the…. [Is it possible to ever play the Bears not in Chicago.]

- Saturday’s game against the Bears will re-air on NFL Network on Sunday, Aug. 26th at 8:00pm PST.

  1. Yea, cause the Niners just paid that ass like 80 mil. So with 2 pre-season games in the books thus far, has Clements really done anything yet? Am I missing all the Clements highlights, or is it way to early and (only pre-season) to tell?

  2. GO NINERS!!!!!!!!! WERE WINING THE WEST

  3. @self scientific

As a corner back not doing anything is a good thing, it means you are doing your job.

  4. I want Larry and Smiley back….can anyone give me a clue about what our cap situation is going to be after this season? Big M….I could use your knowledge at this point.

  5. Ryan go to ninercaphell.com, you can go to the 2008 numbers and beyond.

  6. Yeah Ryan, the only information I have on that is from ninercaphell.com. It basically says we have about $9 mil available this season, and about $6 mil in dead money. The cap will increase next season, but I’m not sure how much. We should have enough money for drafted rookies and locking up guys for the long haul. There should even be enough money for a couple free agent additions, although we shouldn’t ever expect to see a free agency period like this offseason where we broke the bank. We did a good job, but it won’t happen again for a very long time.

By the way, I like this new feature.

  7. i hope u keep up the monday morning punter. i laugh everytime i see that name

  8. Mike…yeah I’m going to, just haven’t really been around alot this offseason. But once the full season kicks off MMP and The Eddies will be back in full force.

  9. Self scientific. We didn’t pay him 80 mil,it comes out to something like 63 mil.And he’s not doing anything in the games so far because nobody’s throwing his way yet. He’s gonna be well worth the money, and he will help our defense greatly.

  10. So Big M, what would you do if Larry says, “Ok, I want to play two more years!” after this season and Smiley wants to get paid at the end of the season as well? Could we get them both? Better yet….do you think McNolan will try to do that. Quality is quality and those two guys are quality…..

  11. I don’t think Smiley is going to be re-signed. If he was in the plans for the future they would have already locked him up. And doubt Larry plays any longer.

  12. I think Smiley wants too much money and we wont resign him.But if Larry Allen wants another year or two(but i think he will retire).

  13. Ryan… I say given their track record for finding talent in the draft, they should have some confidence in letting Smiley go if he’s not willing to settle for less money. Guards are a position where you can find a guy who can contribute right away, similar to RB, but like any other position, if you have a stud, you gotta try to keep him. In this case, though, I am not overly concerned with keeping Smiley. He’s a great player, don’t get me wrong, but we can find a guy to replace him. I don’t see Guard as a position where you have a “franchise” guy, because most of the time, O-Linemen aren’t as “talented” of athletes. It’s easier to find coachable guys that are going to come in and work hard, hit the weights, and get mean than at the “skill” positions, where you are ultimately seeking talent, along with those other things. So yeah, Smiley has real talent because he is such an athlete at Guard, but I think we have some maulers like David Baas and Adam Snyder who have shown they can come in and start, and we can continue to shore up some depth through the draft. Oh and I would not be surprised if Big Larry wants to play another year. Even though he’s gettin up there in age, he is still dominant, but it depends on how his body feels.

P.S. And I don’t want anyone to get on me for saying linemen aren’t talented. I am an offensive line coach myself and I get mad that other positions get called “skill” positions because offensive linemen have to be the most skilled guys on the team, but skills are different than talent. Obviously, any guy in the NFL has a certain amount of talent, even O-Linemen, but skills can be improved upon and developed, whereas talent is a gift.

  14. Thank you, sir.

  15. here are the numbers for everyone to see..

  16. im really looking foward to Brown, Tarell and Nate Clements getting to know each other. I hope Tarell has a work ethis that they say is as good and as hard as Nate if so i would love to see him slid in the starting spot next year and this year i hope he can work his way up to be the 3rd DB for us. If you look b4 he got in trouble he was being talked about as being a second round pick maybe late 1st round so he could be a steal. In the first two preseason game he has had a nice interceation and good defence i just hope he can become another great coner for the niners

  17. Brown should be in competition already for that 3rd DB spot, Spencer is kind of wack.

  18. DOES ANY1 KNOW IF U CAN WATCH THE GAME ON THE INTERNET

  19. I think I love the funny comments on everything more than I do the news. Don’t get me wrong, I love any news on the Niners but it’s getting to the point where you can’t really write any more articles on any one player’s expectations for the year because we’ve read the same shit over and over. But I really thought the comment on Franklin’s article was pretty damn funny.

  20. What did Champ Bailey have thrown at him last year? 4 passes? Quiet at CB is a good thing!
Thanks for the salary link. Good to know.
As for O lineman. I trust in Nolan as many of us do. Good comments Big M. I’ve heard how important Nolan knows the O line is for making holes for Gors, and keeping Alex healthy… Maybe Kwame can learn some better techniquies by watching from the sidelines….
Rest up Frank….can’t wait to see you produce with the way Alex is hitting the receivers!

  21. Gors = Gore
