MMP: Free Agency Not a Sprint

mmp.pngFree agency is on the horizon and the 49ers are still the team with the most cap space. This week Monday Morning Punter brings you links to topics such as stadium hurdles and players at the combine the 49ers are looking at.

– City of San Francisco owns land where 49ers are looking to build stadium in Santa Clara.

– Nothing we already don’t know on the whole OC search.

– The 49ers met with Nebraska defensive end Adam Carriker on Saturday.

– KFFL is reporting that the 49ers are showing interest in offensive tackle Leonard Davis. Which if it means putting Kwame Harris on the bench, I’m all for it.

– Nolan says free agency isn’t a sprint.

  1. Here’s an update from the regarding 2 possible first round choices for the Niners.

Several early mock drafts have the 49ers selecting Laron Landry with the 11th overall pick, and the LSU safety is saying all the right things to make that happen.

“The safety I emulate most would have to be Ronnie Lott,” Landry said Sunday. “He was my childhood favorite. I grew up trying to emulate him. I like his style of play. He’s physical and very tough. … I have tapes on him and everything, DVDs, and I look at him all the time.”

The 49ers also are showing interest in Nebraska defensive end Adam Carriker, who met with the coaching staff Saturday night.

“They liked me because of my size,” Carriker said.

Indeed, Carriker measured in Sunday at 6-foot-8 and weighed 296 pounds – an even more imposing stature than last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick Mario Williams.

Carriker is the ideal size to play end in the 3-4 defense the 49ers hope to run this year and his pass-rushing skills were better than advertised at last month’s Senior Bowl. He soared up teams’ draft boards for the past two months and is a definite possibility for San Francisco.

  2. Ummm…you do realize the update you posted can be viewed from the link in the Adam Carriker part.

  3. Not entirely true Erickson. I clicked the link and was asked for a password, etc. Thank you Ninerfan.

  5. You’re welcome!

  6. Ahh…gotcha…forgot about sacbee requiring the passwords. I have it cookied so that is why that didn’t happen for me.

  7. carriker ran the shuttle in 4.18, faster than most linebackers. i havent got to see the rest of the drills yet, but im recording all the combine stuff so i’d like to see his 40 time. also, there’s a part of the combine where 3 teams who run the 3-4, the 49ers, jets, and ravens, have guys running drills for defensive ends they think that could convert to linebacker in the nfl. our scouts have a first hand look at those guys in those situations.

  8. wide receivers and runningbacks dont even run a 4.18.

  9. Leonard Davis would be a great signing as would Steinbach. Both would give the ability to sit Harris (replacing with either of them or Snyder), both are capable of playing guard and replacing Larry Allen, who probably only 2 more years left. Smiley is a FA at the end of the year, but I think they have more than enough capable guards that they can fill that hole.

An FA signing of Davis or Steinbach, ADT and Nick Harper or Ken Hamlin and I would be extatic.

  10. I REALLY hope if we have to choose between Davis and Steinbach…we chose Steinbach because Davis isn’t going to be worth the money he will be asking for, which will be a lot.

  11. Yes Free Agengy is a Sprint and if you dont get your hand in the jar quick then all the cookies will be gone

  12. well you can stick your hand up a butchers ass but it doesnt mean you will get the right steak.

  13. I hope Nolan is just blowing smoke. I expect to see a big name signed on March 2nd or March 3rd. We’ve already waited for a long time, don’t make us sweat out the free agent period.

  14. Micheal Bush HB could b a 3rd round steal….. broke his leg but b4 that he would have been a 1st or early 2nd rounder…dont 4get the name

  15. The Tommy Boy quote was, “I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull’s ass but I’d rather take a butcher’s word for it.” …I’ll assume that you intentionally misquoted that.

  16. if you watch the whole movie he makes a few different quotes on that joke.

  17. The news that interests me the most is SF/SC move the niner’s want. Its kind of funny the land the Niners pick just so happens to be also, SF! I guess the Niners and SF are really attached at the hip.
BTW Erickson I notice you dont have a category for info on the proposed move. Regardless where you stand on it, seeing as this is the off season and i think there is a number of us San Franciscans who would be interested in information on the move (i personally dont want it to happen, i want a new Stadium here).
    Just my $0.02.

  18. by the way whoever had the tommy boy line totally screwed it up.”you can take a good look at a T-bone steak by sticking your head up a bulls ass.but I’d rather take a butchers word for it.”

  19. Too late stupid

  20. Did I read correctly or what? Is Adam Carriker 6’8″ or was that a mistake?

  21. Just wondering, with all this cap room, why couldn’t Peterson be signed last year? Just wondering what the cap ramifications would have been this year, and having Peterson would have been nice.

  22. Lisa Lang and Santa Clara’s asst. City Manager were both quoted in the Chron article as not seeing the SF-owned pipe as a major issue, just another issue on a long list. Let’s be patient and wait for the planned report and not take the media hysteria to heart.
