it just proves how much we need a inside linebacker.this years draft of inside linebackers sucks!!!!!!!there is only two or three good 3-4 inside linebackers.the rest are only 220 pounds 0r under 6FT.

I agree with zeeke. The guy who made that video is a little biased. half of the bad plays were against LT and S. Jackson. They made a lot of people look bad all season. Also some of those plays he might not have made the tackle, but me redirected or allowed others time to get there and help. Defense is a team thing, not just one linebacker.
the plays you forgot to put on there was the reggie bush td when he came in as he was scoring and you see derick smith jumping at him totaly missing him or against westbrook.
I didn’t think he looked that bad in the video, plus you could make any player look bad by showing their lowlights, just like you can make any player look good by showing their highlights. Brandon Lloyd would look like Lynn Swaan if you made a highlight video of him.
but, if we loose derick smith, is he the one who makes the defensive calls on the field?and whoever the new linebacker is.wont he make the defensive calls with no experiance.im guessing they will leave it up to b.y. hopefully.or maybe moore?

He’s the MIDDLE LINEBACKER…he supposed to MAKE the tackle, not grab someone and get dragged…only for guys to gang tackle the player after he gains 6 yards. Ninaz, I know where you’re coming from, but in the 3-4 the line isn’t supposed to make the sexy sacks and get at the quarterback like in the 4-3. I would rather have Willis, but at this point I would rather have Carriker than Branch.
Derek Smith will be the starting ‘Mike’ next season, because no matter who gets drafted won’t.

I’m hoping Brandon Moore gets a better shot at taking PT away from Derek. He’s still working on his coverage, but he’s lightyears ahead of Mr. Soft.

Nolan just wants ‘space eaters'(how many times have you heard that in the last few weeks), big bodies to plug holes and occupy multiple blockers at a time while the LBs do the majority of the work(which is why the Ravens were so successful their superbowl year and these past few years..they didnt have all star dlinemen, just a bunch of bigs to occupy space so Ray Lewis, AT, Terrell Suggs, Bart Scott, guys like that could thrive..cmon now their best dlineman at the time was Tony Siragusa)..I think the Dline we have now was actually BETTER than the Ravens super bowl season DLine.. so if we did add Carriker..we’d be in great shape..he doesnt have to have major numbers, he just has to know how to close holes and negate cutback options his way.
Its easy to single out one cock eyed LB but its our lack of a good D line that let those backs break out into the open like that. Well, that and the fact that those backs are some of the best in the league. Bulk up that D line baby! Carriker is looking nicer and nicer right? Remember fallas, it all starts in the trenches.
I’d still rather have Willis though, because he could be a pass rush threat AND a coverage backer for us, and that would be extra lovely..But like was said in an earlier forum, if we can do the Jonathan Vilma thing, its a no brainer to draft a DT/DE (aka Carriker or Branch) then go WR in the second, then maybe fill out our depth or whatever, but Jonathan Vilma is a 34 backer, he’s a STUD(I dont know why he would be on the trading block) AND hes young(only been in the L for 3 yrs.)..Our D would be the most nt in the NFC, maybe even the the whole L…but hey, its all on coach Nolan..I trust whatever he does..two years, two EXCELLENT drafts..So I’m feelin good about what were gonna do regardless..

and remember nolan didnt have nothing to do with drafting,ray lewis,a.thomas,saragewsa,chris mcAlister,boulware.and wasnt even on the team when they won a superbowl.the people that were drafted while he was there(roderick green,aubrayo franklin,dwan edwards,edgerton hartwell,anthony weaver,chad williams are no longer there .but there is ed reed,jarrett johnson,scott bart and terrell suggs are the only ones left from when nolan was there.i think that the reason the draft the last two year was sucsesful was because of dave and scot mcCoughan.

people i know we need a DE alot and i understand but there is always good DE’s in the 3nd and 3rd round and Patrick Willis is a must have this year. But as much as i try to deny it i think the bills will trade the texans for the 10th pick and get willis before us and well end up drafting carriker wich is a move i would not enjoy id rather them trade down for a receiver such as darrell jackson but thats one mans opinion.
i say if we can get willis or laron landry if not then trade down,for more draft picks and get,meachem,blalock or spencer (or posably carikker if still avalable in the 20s.

BIGBIG, I watch a ton of Jets games every season. Jonathan Vilma was mediocre in the 3-4, he played just like Julian Peterson, getting owned by linemen consistantly. Thomas, Barton and Hobson were a TON more effective. Willis doesn’t compare to Vilma all that much other than they are super athletic linebackers.
Willis looks like a Ray Lewis clone to me… while Lewis hated the 3-4, he was amazing in it and had one of his best seasons in it. Willis looks a lot more badass than Vilma and hopefully will be able to overcome taking on blockers, which I think he will with his overall body strength.
I actually agree with BIG BIG on this one because Vilma has dominated his opposition. I am all for Willis. Carriker is still good though.
49ers 4eva, you make a great point. I have one question. If we did land Landry who would start in the safety roles? Lewis, and Lewis, Roman and Landry, or what ever other combo comes to mind? One thing is for sure, depth!
Oh yes I definitely agree I love Willis, but If the Vilma thing happened, then of course we should go with Line..I’m here in Berkeley(goin to Cal), so I dont watch Jets games, but I know jonathan Vilma Is a helluva player..plus, he’s young so even if we wouldnt get Willis’ speed and superior(slightly to me) athleticism we would still definitely get a stud backer AND more youth..wasnt this Vilma’s first year in the 3-4 anyway? BIGBIG, Vilma struggled not because it was his first year in a 3-4, but because he’s soft… much like Julian Peterson. Very athletic, very active, but closer to a strong safety than a pure linebacker. Like I said, Hobson, Barton and Thomas all easily outplayed Vilma this year. Well by looking at his stats, he appears otherwise..I think it was just a learning curve he had to go thru..IMO he’s STILL one of the BEST young backers in the League..trust me, I’m a player, u CANT be soft and play Inside Linebacker…Thats also where the similaritities should end..JP is an OLB, Vilma is an MLB..plus, it should be an honor to be compared to JP, even in that negative way because last I checked, JP was doin it big for Seattle, even went to the Pro Bowl..
Eh, when we moved from 4-3 to 3-4, most experienced coaches in the scheme would have moved JP to ILB or just gotten rid of him. Nolan just made a naive move, hoping JP would be able to find a way to succeed since he was a star player.
Vilma’s stats are very similar to Derek Smith’s stats… try to make a tackle, get owned, the guy trips or drags him for awhile. He made VERY few quality tackles this past season.
JP was doing it big on a 4-3 team but was the worst 3-4 OLB possibly of all time when he was here. Vilma is a better overall linebacker than JP but in a 3-4 scheme, he’s simply ineffective.
Derek Smith isn’t a Pro Bowler but like most real fans know, he made more plays than he missed last year. The video is completely biased.
That video isn’t as bad as some are saying. He shows one tackle by Ur slacker as if no linebackers in the league had one tackle??? What, did a carebears fan make this?? I was at the Chicago game last year. The whole team gave up after the 1st quarter. Same thing happened in the KC game. There was some missed tackles in that video, no question, but show me ANY linebacker including Ur slacker who didn’t. Video proof, not just words!! Watch closely, on about 5 or 6 plays at the beginning he was being held or blocked. Leading the team in tackles 5 years running is a good thing. Its trouble when the leading tackler on your team is a safety. If people think a rookie MLB is going to do better, especially against guys like Stephen Jackson and Larry Johnson, by all means we should draft and start him. Our linebackers are going to have a great year this year with the switch to the 3-4. We have more pressing needs than linebacker right now. We need WRs, OL, and a few D Linemen to keep fresh space eaters on the field. I don’t understand disrespecting a Niner who is out there making plays year after year!! Why diss our own, when theres idiots on the carebears, cowhicks, seasquaks, pats, sh*tpackers, oldland faders who deserve this more than D. Smith!!!
I am just an idiot, but would way rather have Vilma than Derek Smith. Smith HAS put in work on our team though. I just feel that Vilma has way more upside and talent…..not to mention that he won’t be retiring soon.
corey, yes if we did land landry wich i doubt because the safety positions are set but knowing nolan he would start lewis and roman cuz the guy loves roman i dont know why but he does and he would propably use landry in nickel and dime plays.
You guys should check out that ninerholics 2008 projections post…we are going to have a lot of money again. IF we really have the numbers that they are talking about then we should be able to go after Asante Samuel (hoping they don’t trade him) and Terrell Suggs (which could turn into a bidding war). I don’t know what kind of money they have after this season, but I do know that they let Adalius Thomas partially because they wanted to ensure that they would be able to resign SUggs. That talk of Vilma was interesting, but I think you will have your answer on draft day if we are interested because if we draft Willis or David Harris then it is unlikely that we trade for Vilma.
The niners are smart about taking the cap hits NOW instead of wading through them. That way Nolan eliminates the players he doesn’t want and starts the rebuilding process at that position immediately. This allows him to find the guys he likes. The list on that post is long. The niners are going to get rid of a lot of unnecessary parts to the system and convert it to free cap space.
We won’t be trading for Vilma anyways. The Jets are considering trading him because he is mediocre in a 3-4 scheme.

yeah, I didn’t even know they ran the jets ran the 3-4. IF we don’t get willis then we are going to draft Carriker, which would lead me to believe that we might go after David Harris in the second. I like Jason Hill, but he doesn’t really match up in value where we will be drafting. He is considered late second round value not early second round.

WAY TOO HIGH!!! I say this because he is a major head case. NO ONE HERE CAN DENY THAT! That is why I am glad we haven’t made a move for him. There aren’t going to be any rumors flying until Monday at the bare minimum. Guys check this out…it should give you a good laugh. So I have been researching trades/draft for weeks now and I just found out that I have to go to a wedding next weekend. I am going to miss the first day of the draft. It sucks! I barely now the people. I have some strong feeling that teams are going to move people around on draft day. (Moss, Jenkins, Green, etc) I also believe that Nolan has something up is sleeve and we are going to end up with to first round picks next Saturday. I am going to miss it all.

That receiver in our case seems to be Jason Hill. IF we get DJAX…expect the seachickens to want something ridiculous in return like our second rounder. They will do this because, like ninaz said, they’re in our division and they know we are revamped. Because of this they are going to be hesitant of giving away a good receiver to a team that might take away the NFC West title from them.
coach nolan should trade block the 2nd round and see wich teams offer wich players in the receiving core.
If we don’t get a “Ready to Play” receiver then we better sign Eric Moulds to a one year deal………..I know it isn’t sexy, but he is still somewhat of a threat….more than Brian Gilmore anyways.
the niners actually considered moulds in the free agency period but they thought he was too old to be the #1 guy they wanted someone that will step up as a leader that we could sign for more than 5 years wich was antonio bryant at first but the guy had to do drugs and ruin his career.

i agree with you ninaz,lalie did drop alot last couple of years.he hasnt had a 60 reception catch season,but hope fully he goess up against nate clements in practices and becomes more tougher and gets better. but i dont know!he probley went up against champ bailey a lot when with the broncos and with atlanta he went up against deangelo hall in practice alot too.so i dont know if he is the right choice or not!

we gave them our second and a third rounder that we got from the Brandon Lloyd deal or the one we already had to acquire that pick from denver.

Yeah, another Ray Lewis is going to be hard to locate in any draft. Willis or Harris would be a great answer to our middle linebacker problem. I agree, Roman needs to be replaced…….eventually. Free safety is something that I would like us to address, but only if we are going to go no further down in talent level than Eric Weddle or that guy from Va Tech…..otherwise don’t bother because in the long term they aren’t going to start. If we draft Carriker AND Harris then I will be happier than if we draft Willis and Jason Hill……..I say this because Carriker and Harris are the better PACKAGE.

Nolan has said that he quesions his character the same way that Branch’s has been questioned. I agree that Moses is a stud, but if he doesn’t have the drive then he doesn’t have the drive. I would rather have Bowe over any receiver who isn’t named Calvin Johnson or Meachum.

The only two teams that I could see us making a deal to grab a second FIRST ROUND pick would be either Washington or New England. With New England looking like the better option.
They have 2 first round picks (like Denver last year) and no picks in the second round, they don’t pick until #91 after 28. So, like us, if they had wanted to move up to grab a second round and a higher 3rd round it would be a good move for us!!
Trade them our #42 pick and #76 pick (compensatory?) and we’d still have our late 3rd round pick to grab New England’s #24 FIRST ROUND selection. Just a thought.
Or better yet trade the same picks to Washington for their #6 picks overall…yeah!!!

they have a system they believe in and it works…if a guy who they like and have rated high on their board is falling they will jump up(trade) and get him…that’s their philosophy…but they are firm they trust their board they dont ever get caught off gaurd…they work through the scenarios before the draft over and over so they have a great sense of what is going on…you would to if you had millions of millions resting on it

I think Nolan likes having this many picks because he will solidify A LOT of positions since most of the picks are in the first four rounds. I just don’t see us moving up with regard to the 11th pick. We MIGHT pull the Manny Lawson, but like I said, probably not going to see anything ATLEAST until Thursday.
