49ers Own Bay Bragging Rights
The 49ers scored late in the 4th with a Thomas Clayton touchdown to go up 26-21. I haven’t watched the game yet but from hearing others seems that tackling is still an issue. Aside from that the numbers from Alex Smith look good. 8-12 for 106 yards and a TD. Also seems Ashley Lelie is making Nolan take notice by showing his skills and trying to lockdown the No. 3 wide receiver spot.
On the defensive side of the ball rookie Patrick Willis had 7 tackles and Mark Roman came up with an interception.

i;m really hoping Ashley Lelie can win that 3rd wide receiver spot. With his speed and D Jax route running that should open alot of things up. If Ashley can have another game like he had tonight he should be a lock for that number 3spot. Speed kills and he has shown that he can get behind the defence when he was in Denver and in Atl.I hope that we can get this tackling problem undercontrol i;m not really worried right now but that is something that we have got to get our hands on cause it can come back to bite us. Other than those two things i feel goot about were our young team is going
I just got the score over here in philly and I said that Thomas Clayton looks like a good draft pick from what I’ve seen from the highlight reel that was on 49erswebzone after the draft but futher more WHAT’S UP RAMS WHERE YA AT YOU TALK SO MUCH SHIT SO WHAT YOU GOT TO SAY ABOUT YOUR BOYS GETTING THEIR ASSES KICKED?

I seen the Alex Smith highlights on nfl.com!Its starting to look like a pretty good tight duo with D.Walker/Vernon Davis!But if we spread the ball around since we got alot of decent receivers we might not have a 1000 yard receiver again..lol

There was some good and some bad.
Our 1st Team Offense was stellar. I wasn’t completely sold on Alex Smith until this game. He’s showing great poise and constant growth. Vernon Davis finally got into the game, which was refreshing. Still, I think he could be more utilized. More than anything, he seems to be taking defenders on and leaving others (Delanie Walker, for example) open. Our running game sub-par, but we still don’t have Gore in there. Pass protection was adequate, but it seemed like our blockers weren’t creating too many holes for Hicks/ Robinson.
Our D still needs LOTS of work. Poor tackling hurt us again. We had a lot trouble stopping the run (especially Lamont Jordan) and our pass rush should have been stronger considering how bad the Raider O-line is. Considering that this is one of the worst offensives in the league, our performance was very disappointing. If the Raiders had just been able to catch the ball when they were WIDE OPEN, the game would not have come down to the ridiculous dropped pass at the end…The Raiders would have won. Our DBS did well. Clements showed that he can tackle, unlike the rest of the team, but did little else (although few balls were thrown his way). Roman had an interception, but also had a bad missed tackle. Lewis was not exposed in coverage and was able to help the LBs get some tackles that they were apparently trying to miss. I thought Spencer looked solid, but I’ve always liked Spencer.
2nd-3rd O- Team: I don’t care what everyone else says, Dilfer is not a very good QB. There…I said it. He may know a lot about the position, but he just doesn’t have it. On the other hand, I’ve been very impressed with Shaun Hill…until he gets to the redzone. For some reason, he just falls apart when he gets close to the endzone. Clayton did alright, but he needs to stop dancing and just hit the holes quickly. He runs like a big guy, but he’s not a big guy. On a few plays, including a goaline stop, he just didn’t seem to have the strength. For a 4th string RB though, he’ll be alright, although I wonder why we didn’t pick up a true goaline scorer in the draft or elsewhere. Our WR situation is absolutely ridiculous. We have 7 receivers who could make this team. Of course, Jackson, Battle, Lelie, and Hill will make the team (although Hill hasn’t done much in the preseason or, from what I hear, in training camp). That leaves Gilmore, Williams, Jacobs, and Maxwell fighting for 2 and possibly 1 spot. Personally, i would cut Williams…I just don’t like him and it’s not like he’s a great KR/PR. Gilmore had a fantastic game. Taylor Jacobs has had a great camp, but hasn’t been fantastic in preseason. Last year, Maxwell could have been our 3rd receiver in some games, but he won’t make the team this year. It’s a shame, he’s a solid #4 and I don’t know where he’s going to go w/o NFL Europa (GO SEA DEVILS!). The line looked ok and Staley really played well. Baas probably scored some points against Smiley just because he didn’t have 2 straight holding penalties (even if one of those was bogus). Kwame played well for Kwame. Remember, he was going up against Burgess, a solid pass rusher, and he only got to the QB twice. I wasn’t too happy with the left side of the line with our 2-3 team. I don’t even know who those guys are, but they were letting the Raiders get too much penetration.
2-3 Defense: Well, our 2nd team D-line started today so that really wasn’t fair. For backups they’re pretty good. Most of the 2nd team LBs are basically there for special teams, with the exception of Willis who was once again solid but disapointingly blase considering all the hype he’s received. The real place to look in the 3rd and 4th quarters are the defensive backs. Keith Lewis once again was not really concerned with coverage as long as he could smack people. Hudson played well, as did Strickland. Curry was caught daydreaming during the Raiders final 40 yard completion.
In all, not a great performance considering that it was the Raiders.

I am going to be the first to say that it is Moore and not Smith that Willis needs to replace. Moore is great at the line, but in open field coverage is not what Willis is. As for Kwame…I am with Medford, Oregon….Staley needs to start. Staley is much more solid and it is apparent that the ENTIRE league knows that speed rushers KILL him. Staley outperformed him by far. As for our receiver situation…I have to agree that Gilmore has outperformed Brandon Williams. There is no way to dispute it. Dilfer is necessary because he is someone who has experienced the promise land ( no matter how much you say he is no Montana, Young, Brady, Elway). He is someone that Alex confides in and seeks guidance from and it is paying off because he looks confident and decisive on the field. I am glad to see McDonald given the chance to start. However, we need to spend a second or first round pick on the d line next draft…period. I think Franklin is going to settle things, and Walt Harris is going to lock down the secondary. This is a great thing…also giving Gore the chance to relax and get the engine fresh for the year isn’t going to hurt.
I’m starting to think the only reason Willis isn’t starting right now is because he’d see less PT in the pre-season if he was first string.
Our main problem is we don’t have a pass rush at all!

Play wise I’m not that happy with either backup quarterback. But as has been said over and over, Dilfer is here to school Alex, and has done a great job. (So they keep telling us) Heaven help the team if Alex goes down….

It’s been an early morning on the East Coast to watch the game but it’s always good to see the Niners in action. I’ve read all the comments regarding the game and my two cents.
Yes, I agree with the fact that the miss tackles are an issue. Thank goodness we’ve got Patick Willis to show us how it’s done. He should teach a clinic in practice on how to wrap a guy up.
Leading the team with 8 tackles.
Keep in mind we performed well against Oakland’s #1 offense without 3 of our projected D starters…Franklin, Douglas and Young. Douglas was out due to personal reasons. Those 3 guys make a BIG difference in what we can do on defence!
As for the Offensive Line Bass and Staley looked good in their bids to take over for Justin (I hold too much) Smiley and Harris.
I hope they do!
There’s nothing wrong with Trent Dilfer, he led the team down the field twice on nice drives and was 7/11 on 77 yards and a touchdown.
Delanie Walker looked good and I’ve been a fan of his from last year’s Preseaon games, until he went down with the injury. There’s nothing wrong with 2 quality TEs.
And Ashley Lelie’s going to have a great year from what I see. He just needs to continue what he’s doing and he’ll be in the mix for the 3rd WR and coming in on 3rd downs to stretch the field. He and Alex seem to have some chemistry and D’Jx looks great!

There was a play or two where Willis was out of position and the Oakland back ran right past him. He’s still young. Brandon Moore’s tackling was still rusty early on. The defensive line, without any of the starters, is still a big question mark for me.
I’d put Clayton ahead of Robinson by what I saw, but then no one runs well against the Raiders’ first-string.
Delanie Walker looks good. Lelie looks good. Jackson looks good. Alex Smith looks very good. The backup QBs look adequate. With Frank Gore in there the offense could be very, very potent. This is the pre-season so I expect the wraps are still on a lot of their offense.
I know the hate directed against Kwame, but he wasn’t bad last night. Smiley, on the other hand, had some problems with his hands. Someone with more of a handle on the process can help me, but if Harris and Smiley are signed by other teams next year as free agents do the Niners get additional draft choices? If they don’t I’d trade these two guys. They both can play in the NFL and linemen are a valuable commodity. That says something about the roster depth that the Niners have this year.
ok seriously the D needs to get their shit together if were going to beat the Cardinals.I could really care less about the preseason……I just want them to put a beat down on the Cards.you can only go so far with a defense that cant tackle or stop the run……for instance the colts last year….before the playoffs…..I believe Jacksonville opened up a forty-burger on them.
The way I see it…. The Cards game in Week 1 is going to really show if we are a playoff team or not. Honestly, Week 1 is crucial for the success and confidence of the team. The 2 losses to the Cards last year really hurt, if we dont win the first game the mindset of the team will be the same. This team has been on the rise since Nolan got here, so anything but the playoffs this year will be failure in my book.

Not one player had a sack in this game! I understand that Young and Franklin are injured, but our run defense is atrocious. We need to sign a big NT in free agency, someone who can take on blockers and open the lanes for our LBs.

I think we should move Vernon Davis to receiver and see how it works. I think he will get more catches and be distructive as a blocker. He will fuck up those Corners & Safetys and his maneuverability is unbelievable! Coach Nolan should experiment with this idea, I think it will be very effective. I think this will make him the best receiver in the league. Vernon will get more catches and no one has seen a beast at receiver like him. Move the fuck over T.O., theirs a new kid in Town!

um, I dont really know the history here, but you “rams” are totally incorrect about which side is easier to run to. It is the strong side, where the tight end is. good pass rushers are on the weak side because they don’t have to chip the tight end to mess up his route and not let him get a free release. this is why left tackles are the franchise linemen, to protect the blindside against pass rush specialists. also, strong side linebackers are bigger due to more running plays going to strong side. Why are you trolling on this site if you are a rams fan anyways?
however, the niners situation is different because they have allen and jennings on the left, so we would obviously run more that way

Wow, you really are stupid. Generally a team’s best pass rushing DE will line up at RDE and go against left tackles. The best offensive linemen are Left Tackles. It is by far the highest paid offensive line position on average. Orlando Pace, Walter Jones, Willie Roaf (before he retired this year), Jonathon Ogden: all left tackles.
Harris is a good run blocker but Allen is a run blocking machine and Jennings is damn good too. Staley is pretty much guaranteed to be starting at RT at some point this year. The reason Harris wasn’t released is because Staley was considered to be a raw player who might need more experience before being able to start but he has exceeded all expectations. His strength is pass blocking and he will most likely be switched over to LT next year or the year after.
And the right side is usually easier to run to because that’s where the tight end lines up. Another blocker is obviously going to make it easier to run to that side.
Most backs have a pretty even split between yards to the left and runs to the right (check out your boy Jackson’s splits if you don’t believe me). Gore has more than twice as many yards to the left as the right. Obviously this means that is easier to run behind Jennings and Allen than it is to run behind Harris and Smiley (although it helps that Smiley is really good at pulling so he can get out ahead on runs to the left and open up even more running room).
You’re just embarrassing yourself here with your lack of football knowledge.
Forget to mention: I know all about strong sides and weak sides (more than you, obviously). It’s called the strong side for a reason: the TE lines up there so that is where the line is the “strongest” (read: easiest to run to). And the Niners didn’t go out and draft an OT in the first round to replace Harris because Harris is good.
One more thing: LOL @ Patrick Willis not knowing how to tackle. He was third in the NCAA in tackles last year.
