Just Start Staley Already…

frustration.pngEarlier today Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat said that Nolan was to make a decision on the starting right tackle position.

Well the decision was looking like it was to go down today, but unfortunately Nolan hasn’t put the crackpipe down and still says there is competition at the right tackle position between rookie Joe Staley and Kwame “I Get Knocked Down” Harris.

“It’s very close,” Nolan said. “They’ll continue to alternate with the first group in practice. When there is something to announce, I’ll let you know.”

For the love of Niner Gods, Mike, just do us all a favor and start Staley and let Harris hand out gatorade or something.

  1. Maybe Nolan is trying to increase Kwame’s trade value by not making this seemingly easy decision look so easy…

  2. It’s only a matter of time. After watching the pre-season Staley is clearly the better option regardless of what Nolan is saying. Nolan may be trying to get something for Harris, but I just don’t see any teams making that trade for a 1 year player. The Niners would be extatic if they could get even a 7th rounder for him, but I just don’t see it happening. Other teams scouts see the same things we do. Unless someone gets hurt in the last pre-season game I don’t see the Niners moving Harris anytime soon.

  3. He has to be trying to increase his trade value. What other reason is there that Staley shouldn’t have already been named the starter? Do it already?

  4. Hey, Arizona’s starting Right Tackle just got put Injured Reserve. I see that as a great trade option, anyone else??? The 49er’s would get to see Kwame twice a year.

  5. Staley will be starting by the Ravens game. They’re keeping Harris up there for the time being because it allows Staley to get up to speed while keeping Harris’s value high. That said, there’s no way the Cards would take him. While the coaches haven’t seen him enough to know how terrible he is, the players have. What’s more, they have a rookie of their own who will be cutting his teeth in the absence of a worthless veteran.

  6. I think Nolan just wants to be sure that Staley is not going to get Alex Smith killed against savvy veteran pass rushers. Staley has never seen the type of that Shawn Merriman is. Who better to test him on then Shawn Merriman? At least Kwame will hold him or get knocked into Alex and cause the sack himself. One thing he does know is when to hold. It’s one of his best moves. If Staley is surprised by the speed a guy like Merriman could just come around the edge and bury Alex. I would bet that Staley doesn’t go in until Dilfer is in there which will probably be the second series. I’ll be surprised if Staley is in there when Alex is. That is probably what Nolan is thinking.

  7. I don’t know about what is holding Nolan back from starting Staley. It makes so much sense to me, but I am not at practice. The fact that Staley is already challenging him for his position and he hasn’t even played a regular season game shows you how much we aren’t going to miss him. We just need to be sure to replenish the o line depth after this season. It would be a colossal mistake to not do that.

  8. yup someone has to slap nolan in the face to realize that willis and staley should be full time starters and willis should get strong side and smith should be on weak or bench smith for moore. Am i right?

  9. let Staley play the full last pre-season game. Then switch the D to a 4-3.Oh and Frank Gore would help a whole lot too.

  10. I dont agree with cutting R. Green he might not be a good linebacker but he could rush the qb why not have swithched him to de we need help there wen was the last time douglas did anything i would also rather have brandon williams on the team then gilmore williams can return punts he almost broke one against chicago.

  11. One thing i have noticed is that EVER SINCE SHAWNTE SPENCER HAS GOTTEN THAT CONTRACT EXTENSION HE HAS SUCKED WATS WITH HIM IS HIS WALLET TO HEAVY OR SOMETHING I AGREE WITH U GUYS ABOUT THIS 3-4 THING WE KEEP TRYING THIS OUT BUT IT DOESNT WORK MAYBE IF WE GOT MULLET OUT OF THE LINEUP IT WOULD AND NEDNEY WATS UP WITH THIS GUY CANT MAKE A PAT AND KICKOFFS THAT GO OUT OF BOUNDS HE SCARES ME ALOT IM NOT TO WORRIED ABOUT R OFFENSE BECAUSE WE DIDNT DO TO MUCH LAST PRESEASON BUT THE FIRST GAME LAST YEAR AGAINST THE CARDS WE LOOKED DIFFERENT

  12. CAN YOU GUYS DO ME A FAVOR GO TO http://www.fox26medford.com AND VOTE FOR THE 49ERS THE QUESTION IS WATS THE FAVORITE TEAM BETWEEN THE NINERS, GAYHAWKS AND THE RAIDERS THE GAYHAWKS HAVE THE LEAD WE R IN SECOND I KNOW U GUYS DONT LIVE HERE BUT AS NINER FANS WE CANT HAVE THE GAYHAWKS BEAT US IN ANYTHING THANKS

  13. Medford, i voted but we are still in 2nd place.

  14. thanks gold chin

  15. I voted, but something is wrong up there if the seachickens are the favorite.

  16. my vote is in

  17. Why are the 49ers treated like an unpopular team by players of the league and the the rest of the NFL? It Seems like no one finds any interest in our team anymore. Just ten years ago and before every player wanted to go to the 49ers. A player was lucky to land here, and players would take pay cuts to play here. What I think happen was the “Erickson Effect.” That Scoundrel dismanteled this team, lettin go of T.O. and other important players. Just imagine we could of prevented T.O. from going to that Hillbilly team the cowgirls. I want that popular draw back to our team. The national cowboy loving media has shit on us for too long. We need to be recognized as the elite team in the NFL once more. Please win 49ers! Bring it back! This Team is the standard in Football! Win or go home!

  18. When you put that uniform on your putting on a legacy. That is alot to live up to. Win, Losing is uneceptable!

  19. MIKE NOLAN IS THE MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!! GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. 3rd receiver – Gilmore, Jacobs or Lelie?
Bryan Gilmore (46 catches in seven seasons) and Taylor Jacobs (34 catches in four seasons) are in the running with Ashley Lelie (196 catches in five seasons, including 54 for Denver in ’04).

Lelie.3rd………….an Gilmore an Hicks n return game

  21. Lelie has made a strong showing with the 2nd team the last 2 weeks. My guess is he will be at least #4. Battle and Jackson are a given. Hill will make the team probably #5. Williams is a pretty safe bet as well. So I think that gives you your 5, Jackson, Battle, Lelie, Hill and Williams. Really it comes down to how many receivers they will keep. If they decide to keep 6, then I think you can flip a coin on Gilmore or Jacobs. Personally I think they should take Gilmore, he offers more special teams performance.

  22. Medford, I voted and now we are in First place!

  23. Did anyone catch this….

RB Kevan Barlow may be on borrowed time. He was released by his hometown team, the Steelers, as they made their cuts down to 75 man limit. Barlow was a third round pick of the 49ers in 2003 and in his third year rushed for over 1,000 in part time duty and looked to be the successor to Garrison Hearst. However Barlow despite being a big back was a soft runner who rarely broke the first tackler and danced too much behind the line. The 49ers suckered a 4th round pick from the Jets last year for him and he was cut after the first year there. Strangely the Steelers signed him hoping he could be their powerful compliment to Willie Parker, what were they thinking. They cut their losses early…

  24. Barlow was horrible. No Mas! He was part of the downfall Years!

  25. Jacobs is probably at 3 or 4 right now. Gilmore is probably at 5 or 6. I really think Jacobs and Williams get the nod over Gilmore as they are much younger and have way more upside and potential. Gilmore had no receptions last game. As for his special teams performances, Williams can take that load. Say goodbye to Gilmore. I hope.

  26. I’m a huge believer in what Nolan is doing for our Niners. But anytime something goes wrong with the O Line, because I have Tivo, I go back and look. It’s usually Kwame…. what good is keeping him in there if his pathetic blocking gets Alex Smith Injured??? C’Mon Nolan, GET HIM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Also not a fan of Gillmore. Wasn’t impressed last year. And he seems to run up the backs of people like Barlow used to when he returns….

  28. It was just posted on the Niners website that Nolan has named Staley as the starting right tackle!! Life is good in Ninerville. Alex Smith should buy him a car.

  29. staley named starter-now we need to trade harris-i think our receiving corps looks to be jackson, battle, lelie, jacobs, hill, williams

  30. See you later Kwa-lame. Sit your ass down! I will live with some rookie mistakes. Nolan is doing a hell of a job. He knew; the day that he drafted Willis and Staley, that they would take over for Smith and Harris. He took his time to make it look like a competition. He replaced two weak links on our team. We will be better for it. I’m rollin…..are you?

  31. oh hell yea! my hope is we return to vintage 9er D that is hard hitting physical and tough-and if vd could learn to run routes like brent jones-we need to return to glory not next year but right now!Q the winston churchill speech

  32. THANK YOU GOD FOR MAKING MIKE NOLAN THINK OF SITTING KWAME HARRIS AND STARTING JOE STALEY!

  33. razoreater, I like where your head is, but Kwame is still a good back up…..I know I don’t really like him either, but he IS a good back up. If the niners get the right price for him then let him go, but I doubt they will considering this is the last year of his contract. When the draft comes we better be looking at improving the line on both the o and the d. Staley is the better player and that does speak volumes about the fact that we probably made a great pick by getting him right from under the Ravens noses. Rumor has it that they were dead set on getting him and we stole him from them.

  34. we have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds 2 first & a 2nd I say we use 2 of those picks on the d- line & the other on either a receiver or db. I know its way to early to be talking bout next years draft but I need something to talk about till thursday.

  35. Thanks guys for voting keep those seachickens down

  36. I dont know why Ryanthe1st why they like that dumb team up here we r closer to sf than seattle well hopefully cause all you guys voted maybe the niners will b on every sun now

  37. HEY GUYS LOOK AT THIS GUY FROM MSNBC HAS US GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL WE FINALLY GET LOVE EVEN THOUGH HE SAYS WERE GOING TO LOSE TO THE PATS http://www.49erswebzone.com/content/news/view.php?id=10787

  38. staley is starting

  39. niner, we don’t have two first rounders…we gave up our original pick to get Staley. However, we do get the Colts pick so we still have a first rounder…even if it is going to be at least in the high twenties.

  40. Head coach Mike Nolan solidified one starting position that was in question late on Tuesday afternoon by naming Joe Staley as the new starting right tackle instead of Kwame Harris.

“Starting positions on our team are earned,” said Nolan. “Nobody is handed a starting role. Just like the linebacker spot with Patrick, this decision had more to do with what Joe has done. Both Joe and Kwame had outstanding camps. It was a very close competition. Joe was more consistent. That is the reason for the decision. Joe earned the starting position based on his production on the football field both in practice and in the games.”

Staley, a first-round draft choice out of Central Michigan, said he was told of the news by his position coach George Warhop.

“He called me into his office, told me I was the starter, and not to screw it up,” said Staley. “Coach is kind of intimidating, so I didn’t want to really show my excitement, but I’m definitely excited and looking forward to this opportunity. I feel like I can get the job done, and I’ve gained the confidence that I need to play out there with the first team over the last few weeks.”

Staley joins Patrick Willis as the second rookie expected to start for the 49ers this season when the team open up against the Arizona Cardinals on September 10.

  41. Gilmore looks stronger back there…..willaimz 1 touch an he goes down…or fallz n2 a blocker an goes down….need who finna make us better this year….pick another up next year…draft ..f.a….
    win now..

  42. Medford, sorry didn’t see earlier…just voted….57% Niners (something like 20% above Seattle)….looks strong for you up there!

  43. thanks lawrance

  44. after staley’s “great” performance giving up a sack and then fumble, i’m glad to say you niner fans are all dumb-asses. have fun in week 7 when joe staley is completely overwhelmed, harris is gone, and there is nobody to protect your precious alex smith, who by the way, is not that good. go ahead and blame it on the o-line…one win against arizona…whoopee. niners suck
