Spotlight on the Mad Samoan

•August 31, 2007 • 6 Comments

One player so far this season is raising eyebrows based on his preseason play. No it’s not Taylor Jacobs – two catches for 22 yards won’t do it – it’s Hawaii’s latest hero Isaac Sopoaga. Here is a recent snippet from ESPN, talking about how after his preseason performance, look for him to split time with Aubrayo Franklin.

Fourth-year Niners DT Isaac Sopoaga has never had a problem passing the eyeball test. An imposing-looking physical specimen if ever there was one, the 6-2, 325-pound Sopoaga is widely considered the strongest player on the team, but a glaring inconsistency and concerns about his intensity have kept him relegated to reserve duty — until now. After back-to-back impressive performances in game situations for the first time in his career, we hear Sopoaga could be sharing the load at nose tackle this season with free-agent addition Aubrayo Franklin — who is expected to be fully recovered in time for Week One from the knee injury that has sidelined him this preseason — much more than the team originally had planned.

The reason for the Mad Samoan’s change of direction? New D-line coach Jim Tomsula, who has taken more of an interest in Isaac than previous D-line coach Gary Emanual.

Turnover, Turnover, and Turnovers….

Well after the first half performance, hopefully the 49ers have gotten the turnovers out of their system.

I have only one question. What the hell happened to Brandon Moore. How can a player change so quickly.

Gameday: 49ers vs Chargers

For those with NFL Network you can see the game live tonight, so no tape delay. Looks like Gore will not play even though he has the green light to do so. I doubt many starters get that much playing time. Look for the backups getting more playing time to see if they can make the team.

About Damned Time

Staley finally named starter.

Head coach Mike Nolan solidified one starting position that was in question late on Tuesday afternoon by naming Joe Staley as the new starting right tackle instead of Kwame Harris.

“Starting positions on our team are earned,” said Nolan. “Nobody is handed a starting role. Just like the linebacker spot with Patrick, this decision had more to do with what Joe has done. Both Joe and Kwame had outstanding camps. It was a very close competition. Joe was more consistent. That is the reason for the decision. Joe earned the starting position based on his production on the football field both in practice and in the games.”
