What Now?
Well it’s been five days since the start of free agency and it appears as if the Niners moves may have come to a standstill. The 49ers have been busy this offseason and Nolan and Co. are slowing putting the pieces in place. Not only did they sign five new faces, but they also locked up current ones. Here is a quick breakdown of what the 49ers have done so far this offseason.

On the horizon:
The 49ers have a decision to make in regards to punter Andy Lee, the Steelers made him an offer on Tuesday and they have seven days to match or they receive the Steelers sixth-round pick. Also Eric Johnson has visited the Saints and the Dolphins are showing interest in Maurice Hicks. Aside from these three the 49ers other free agents will likely not be coming back. The 49ers also need to start deciding on the future of Frank Gore.
The Draft:
Here is the breakdown of the 49ers draft picks. They have ONE pick in the first round (No. 11); ONE pick in the second (No. 42); ONE pick in the third round (No. 76), plus an expected compensatory pick for losing Julian Peterson: THREE picks in the fourth round (the Redskins’ for the Brandon Lloyd trade, their own, and the Jets’ for the Kevan Barlow trade), plus an expected compensatory pick for losing Andre Carter. The 49ers also have ONE pick apiece in the fifth and sixth rounds. They don’t have a seventh-rounder because of the Trent Dilfer trade. (Source: Matt Maiocco)
Now we just have to sit back and wait to see if any more players get signed, if so don’t look for them to be big name players. And then wait for the draft.

I think lee’s a great punter, and he proved that he can kick well throughout the season. Losing a punter will just add put more on our plate in terms of filling holes.
i dont really think there are too many more holes to fill. wr, mlb, rt. the other things we need are reserves like for gore and some replacement guys for b.y. and allen. other than that i think were in pretty good shape. cant wait to see two tight end sets with VD and delanie walker now that they have been in the system for a year and learned their routs. two big fast tight ends a sick running back, and a beast fullback in moran norris (probowl snub!!!) shit, they can line up and just escourt alex smith into the endzone. i cant wait, the year of the niner has returned!!! suddenly things look very bright for us fellas, cant say too much about the sorry ass raiders. their going in to what we just got out of but their sallary cap hell is gonna be way worse. muahahahahaha

ya when he’s got two eyes he’s good. smith has been pretty good for us as an mlb. not really a fiery leader but he gets production, hopefully his eye surgery gets him back to what he used to be. we still need another mlb though. maybe we can get one with the one of the early pics. i think nolan is gonna go wideout in round two so maybe a good mlb in the 3rd. 1st is probably gonna go with whichever one ogf those defensive freaks falls to us. landry anderson and adams will probably be gone before we draft unless we move up but there is still great talent at the 11 spot. damn, i cant wait till draft and preseason, the stretch between draft and preseason is gonna suck, many of us will suffer withdrawal.

So, you think D. Smith is worth the nearly 5 mil due this season. I think Willis is Nolan’s guy he beams when he talks about him. As far as a player (WR) I didn’t have anyone specific in mind. But Nolan did say he was looking into trafing for one because he felt the free agency class was not that deep. They need to plug holes and add depth. With the low tenders we could lose some RFA’s like Hicks and Lee.
Also, everyone is worried about signing gore to a long term deal. BE PATIENCE. What I think Nolan is going to do is draft people sign them and then look and the situation and start negotiating with “THE AGENT”

As far as the draft goes, I like Willis, Carriker or even Landry. For our second pick if Sidney Rice is available then I’d grab him. We need some WR help.
I do hope we don’t lose Andy Lee, he was a good punter for us last year…goodness knows he got plenty of practice.
And my thoughts on the 2007 season would be simply to win 10 games or more and make the playoffs. If we don’t that’s cool, I’ll take the 10 games.

Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange explains that the eight-year, $80 million deal given by the 49ers to cornerback Nate Clements contains a phony final year, which automatically will be voided when a $10 million option bonus is paid to the player in 2008.
So either the option bonus won’t be paid, and it’ll be just a one-year deal — or the option bonus will be paid, and the contract will be worth $64.02 million over seven years.
This is far different from a puffed up back end; it’s a complete fabrication of the final year.
They could have picked any number for that final year. Instead of eight years, $80 million, the contract could have been eight years, $100 million. Or eight years, $800 million. Or eight years, infinity.
So why did they plop $15.98 million into the eighth year will disappear a year from now? It was, in our view, a favor to the agent, who’ll now be able to trumpet to recruits the fact that he negotiated an “eight-year, $80 million” contract.
He didn’t. It’s seven years, $64.02 million. Still impressive, but not as catchy.

We still need a strong pass rush from the defensive end position although we may be able to get around that with the 3-4 because we can bring LB’s to attack the QB. Also we need another lineman for depth cause K. Harris should be traded.
Lelie ain’t gonna cut it as a number one so if we don’t sign anyone in FA then expect either the 1st of 2nd to be a wideout.
In the draft you have to take the players in this order if they’re still there, Branch, Landry (Roman moves to the bench), Willis (D. Smith becomes trade bait), and Carriker. We have so many draft picks I think we could trade up and nab a player like C-J.
We should trade some guys especially K. Harris, and D. Smith if we get another middle linebacker. Smith is makin a lot of dough this year that we could spend on better players.

As far as PR/KR we can draft Steve Breaston from Michigan. His receiving stats are not good which will cause him to drop to 4th/5th round but he does run a 4.4,4.3 40 and a great return man for us. He can be our “DEVIN HESTER”. 4 REAL We have at least 2 picks in the 4th round. NOLAN GO FOR IT!! MORE SPEED ON THE FIELD!!!!!!!!
